As a gamer who’s been through countless Netflix binges, I must say that the second season of Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology series was nothing short of captivating. The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story took the spotlight this time, surpassing even the popularity of Dahmer in some circles.
When the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series, “Monster,” debuted on Netflix in September 2024, it reignited as a cultural sensation. Interestingly, this season’s storyline about the Menendez brothers, titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” seems to have surpassed the initial season’s popularity with “Dahmer.” Now, everywhere you look, people are discussing the series and the intriguing case it portrays.
After the contentious debut of the film “Monsters“, discussions about the Menendez brothers intensified dramatically. In recent times, the case has drawn significant interest due to supporters advocating for Lyle and Erik on social media. Although “Monsters” was met with a varied response, it wasn’t long before the brothers received their first new trial in three decades following its release.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share an exciting tidbit: after the recent hearing news, the brilliant mind behind Monsters, Ryan Murphy, hinted at the possibility of crafting a few new episodes to capture the latest events, provided Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch were ready to reprise their challenging roles. However, it seems one of the stars might not be keen on returning.
At the Academy Museum Gala, Variety met up with Koch, and inquired if he’d be interested in shooting additional episodes featuring Murphy’s potential bonuses. This is what the actor responded:
I think we told the story. We did it. I think I’m ready to go onto the next thing. I’ve loved talking about it and I’ve loved advocating for them and I’m really excited for them to get out hopefully, but in terms of being Erik again, I think I’m ready to let that go.
Koch has been vocal in the media about supporting Lyle and Erik following the release of the show, including visiting them in prison with Kim Kardashian. This isn’t unexpected since he may be cautious about using their story for additional entertainment and avoiding being perceived as overzealous in his advocacy. With “Monsters” behind him, it’s clear that he’s already thinking about what new projects lie ahead in his career.
The Lyle and Erik Menendez story, titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” marked a significant achievement for Koch and is generating Emmy discussions due to his performance. However, it seems unlikely that further episodes of the series as a conclusion are necessary. This may have simply been Ryan Murphy expressing his thoughts aloud rather than making an official decision. As of now, Netflix has not made any public statements regarding extending the season to incorporate the recent hearing.
Even though it might take some time, the possibility of additional episodes is not imminent. The third season of the show “Monster,” featuring Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein, will start filming on October 31, 2024. Additionally, Murphy has a large number of new, returning, and upcoming television series in various stages of production for both broadcast and streaming platforms.
Despite expressing reservations about reprising his iconic role as Erik Menendez, Koch has expressed interest to Variety in taking on the part of Patrick Bateman for Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming American Psycho remake. Given his current surge in popularity, he appears to be a strong contender for the role, and it would certainly be fitting for him to pursue it.
