As a connoisseur of all things entertainment, I must say that 2024 was indeed a golden year for Netflix, with a plethora of captivating shows and movies gracing our screens. However, amidst this abundance of talent, there were some performances that truly stood out and left an indelible mark on my heart, much like the graffiti on the walls of my beloved Brooklyn.
2024 was a standout year for Netflix productions, and it’s hard to deny. From captivating conversations to massive viewership, Netflix’s content left an indelible mark on pop culture that went beyond our individual opinions. This year, more than any other, Netflix took the wheel in shaping popular culture.
2024 saw Netflix’s series and films captivate audiences not just because of their engaging narratives and addictive viewing experience, but also due to the outstanding performances by a mix of fresh talents and seasoned stars we adore. Both newcomers and veterans delivered breathtaking performances that made these shows must-watch in 2024.
Among the numerous captivating performances this year across various platforms, three Netflix shows truly caught our eye. These include a striking portrayal by Cooper Koch in “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story”, an exceptional performance by Keri Russell in season 2 of “The Diplomat”, and the mesmerizing act by Ambika Mod in “One Day”. However, there are over 20 more performances worth acknowledging, which you can find listed below!
Cooper Koch in Monsters
Before the second part of Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” anthology series debuted in September, Cooper Koch was not widely recognized. At 28 years old, he had limited experience, with roles in just two minor horror films prior to getting his big break as Erik Menendez in “The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” However, following his Emmy-worthy performance, it’s likely we’ll be seeing a lot more of him in the future.
Working alongside his on-screen sibling Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Koch found himself handling a challenging role. The actors were diligent in depicting the Menendez Brothers, despite the series stirring up controversy over some of its content. Koch shoulderered the emotional burden of Erik’s ordeal, particularly during the emotionally charged one-take performance that graced episode 5.
Year after year, there are several rising stars who capture our hearts online, earning the title of “everyone’s crush” for a few exciting months. In 2024, Koch was one of those captivating actors who stole everyone’s breath away. His performance in Monsters, which was unforgettable (and not just because it was so good), left us spellbound and eagerly anticipating his next role. We can hardly wait to see what he does next!
Keri Russell in The Diplomat
Following her Golden Globe win for “Felicity” and three Emmy nominations for “The Americans,” Keri Russell seems to have found her moment in the spotlight with “The Diplomat.” Her stellar performance screams, “Here I am, among the elite!” Although she may not be trying to boast, this is the powerful impression her act leaves.
In Netflix’s political drama “The Diplomat,” Russell portrays the character of Kate Wyler with a unique blend of confidence, bravery, and vulnerability. She has demonstrated these qualities in previous roles, but in this part, they are intensified to create a performance that would lack the same impact if played by someone else. Russell skillfully embodies Kate’s raw aspects, making her an unexpectedly endearing character.
In its second season, “The Diplomat” raised the bar on excellence, with a significant portion of that success owed to Russell delving deeper into her complex character. As a diplomat navigating political intrigue, Kate is always expected to be the sharpest mind in the room. Russell masterfully handles the intricate dialogue and the frenetic pacing of Kate’s daily life. It’s high time we recognized Russell for this exceptional portrayal!
Ambika Mod in One Day
In the swift passage of time, marked by numerous hit series, limited series, and films, a captivating Netflix miniseries titled “One Day,” based on David Nicholls’ book of the same name, was unfortunately overlooked amidst the crowd. Released in February 2024, this poignant tragic-romantic drama resonated deeply with audiences, but eventually gave way to more sensational and popular titles.
Without forgetting to acknowledge it before the year concludes, let’s give credit to Ambika Mod for her outstanding performance as a co-lead in the series. Previously, she was seen on BBC One miniseries “This Is Going to Hurt” in 2022. However, it’s her role in “One Day” that truly marks her breakthrough, and boy, did she excel! As Emma Morely, she perfectly encapsulated the complexities of a woman navigating through life and relationships.
In a striking performance, the character on-screen portrayed by Mod, notably Leo Woodall from “The White Lotus,” has undeniably given one of this year’s standout performances. The synergy between Mod and Woodall is indisputable and incomparable, overflowing with chemistry. Although One Day marked Mod’s introduction to many global viewers, it would be amiss not to acknowledge her exceptional talent that left a lasting impression.
