The film titled “Coolie,” featuring Rajinikanth in the lead role, is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on August 14, 2025. Prior to the movie’s release, director Lokesh Kanagaraj shared that his initial pick for the character Dayal was Soubin Shahir, before making the final decision.
Who did Lokesh Kanagaraj approach first for Coolie?
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj shared that he had considered a different actor to portray the character Dayal, rather than choosing Soubin Shahir in the end.
Responding to this, Loki explained, “At first, the character wasn’t intended for Soubin sir; instead, it was written for another actor. Unfortunately, we couldn’t collaborate due to several reasons I prefer not to disclose. After that, I found myself at a loss as to who could fill his shoes since the script was tailored specifically for him.
The director went on to explain that his second preference was Fahadh Faasil, stating, “I’d love to collaborate with Fahadh sir once more, but unfortunately, he wasn’t free. I didn’t want him to replicate the role he played in Vikram. As a result, I explored numerous other acting talents, and eventually, I cast Soubin sir.
Soubin Shahir as Dayal
Among the initial cast members revealed for the movie Coolie, Soubin Shahir stood out as the character Dayal. Notably, in the song Monica, he could be seen dancing with Pooja Hegde, showcasing his acting skills as part of the Manjummel Boys.
About Coolie
The movie, titled “Coolie,” is an upcoming Tamil-language action film featuring Superstar Rajinikanth as the main character. This story is set primarily at a harbor and focuses on the lives of workers, with Nagarjuna Akkineni and Upendra Rao taking on significant roles.
In addition to established stars, Bollywood legend Aamir Khan is set to have a brief role in this film. Furthermore, a talented group of actors including Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Pooja Hegde (for a dance sequence), and others will also be featured in the movie.
During a recent interview, Lokesh Kanagaraj has confirmed that the trailer for the film “Coolie” is scheduled to debut on August 2, 2025. However, the director wishes to keep the storyline under wraps until its official release.
Meanwhile, it has been announced that Fahadh Faasil will star in the Tamil film titled “Maareesan,” set to hit theaters on July 25, 2025. This movie is helmed by director Sudheesh Sankar, and Vadivelu will appear alongside him as a co-lead.
