Constantine 2 Update: Writer Addresses R-Rated Sequel Possibility & More

As a long-time fan of the supernatural genre and a devoted follower of the Constantine saga since its inception in 2005, I can’t help but feel like a kid on Christmas Eve as we finally get some substantial updates about Constantine 2. The wait has been arduous, to say the least, with years of radio silence followed by glimmers of hope only to be dashed again. But this time feels different; the script is in progress, and the team seems more determined than ever to bring us a sequel that will surely satisfy our craving for more of John Constantine’s dark adventures.

After long periods without communication, the team responsible for Constantine 2 has started to provide significant information about its advancements. The initial film featuring Keanu Reeves was launched in 2005 and received mixed opinions. Despite this, it has built a loyal fanbase, with enthusiasm for a follow-up intensifying as the years go by. Consequently, the creators have now given an optimistic update on the production of Constantine 2.

Constantine 2 writer on script progress and R-rated sequel potential

Recently, producer Akiva Goldsman disclosed that he’s presently writing the script for Constantine 2 (the sequel to Constantine).

In a conversation with Collider, Goldsman provided updates on the progress of Constantine’s sequel. “Things are moving along well,” he stated. “I’m currently drafting a script for Constantine 2. It’s shaping up nicely. I aim to deliver the final version to my colleagues shortly.”

In addition, the filmmaker hinted at the potential for the sequel to receive an R-rating. Akiva Goldsman brought up Keanu Reeves’ interview with Stephen Colbert and shared their struggles in obtaining an R-rating for their original film. He expressed, “Initially, we believed our movie would be rated PG-13, but it ended up being R due to the presence of demons. As a result, everyone seemed to think, ‘If it had been rated R, perhaps we could have delved even deeper into some of the themes we were exploring.'”

After that, the director of the initial film, Francis Lawrence, has also given hints about his ambition to create Constantine 2 with an R-rating as strongly as feasible. As of now, it’s still uncertain whether the sequel will be produced in a way that surpasses the PG-13 rating.

Why Constantine 2 took so long to get greenlit

In 2005, Keanu Reeves first donned the role of the fantastical character. Ever since, fans have been eagerly waiting for a sequel, but the movie’s development has faced numerous hurdles. One significant factor causing delays is the complications surrounding the rights to the DC comics character.

According to director Francis Lawrence (previously stated), he, Keanu Reeves, and Akiva Goldsman fought persistently to acquire rights for the supernatural detective in Constantine 2. Now, they’ve managed to secure some control and are actively working towards bringing the sequel into fruition as reported by CBR.

Updates on Constantine 2 have been postponed again, this time because of the major writers’ strike that took place in 2023. Since the production was just starting, it had to be paused temporarily. Nevertheless, the script for the film is now being written, and eager fans can look forward to fresh updates soon.
