As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I find myself rather disheartened by the current state of Concord, Sony and Firewalk Studios’ latest foray into the live-service co-op shooter genre.
The new collaboration between Sony and Firewalk Studios in the live-service cooperative shooter genre has had a somewhat sluggish beginning. On its first day, the game only managed to attract around 700 players on Steam, which is a relatively low number. Unfortunately, this trend seems to be persisting, as now even finding matches is becoming an issue for players, with wait times for the Concord mode stretching up to five minutes.
If you’ve never played live-action games before, you might not expect queues to take so long. Typically, in games like Call of Duty, Overwatch, CS2, or Valorant, wait times are significantly shorter, often lasting less than a couple of minutes. Therefore, if you’re waiting five minutes, it could indicate one of three possibilities: either your internet connection is acting up, the game servers are experiencing issues, or there simply aren’t many players participating.
Even though the initial issues encountered in a live-service game are typically manageable through patience, the later problem seems concerning and may lead to further complications. Regrettably, it appears that Concord is struggling with a diminished player base, as hinted by some player feedback.
On the Concord subreddit, user Wickie09 expressed, “I waited eight minutes for matchmaking and it timed out. Since it was during peak hours, I opted to play something else instead. It doesn’t seem very promising at all.” Later, they explained that their comment was made at 11 am in the EU region on a PS5, which is known for having a larger player base compared to its Steam version. Therefore, enabling crossplay might not be beneficial in this case.
You could contend that the extended wait times in their Concord queue are due to them not playing during peak periods, but typically, for a new game, you shouldn’t experience difficulties finding matches regardless of time or location, given its global availability. However, despite lead character designer Jon Wesinewski’s statement that the team is prepared to continue developing it for years, they might struggle to do so if current trends persist.
