Concord: Back from the dead? Recent updates hint at possible return

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen some truly epic fails and miraculous comebacks. The tale of Condor, however, has to be one of the most intriguing mysteries in gaming history.

The movie “Condor” might be one of the most significant flops in the entertainment industry. Despite its massive production budget, estimated to exceed $100 million, it allegedly managed to sell merely around 25,000 copies, equating to approximately $1 million in revenue. This poor performance was due to the fact that it was critically panned, leading to Sony withdrawing it from the PlayStation store and Steam within just a fortnight.

Yet, as per the Steam database records, it appears that Concord’s files are still undergoing updates. If their plan was indeed to leave this game in its final resting place, one might wonder why they’re still making changes to it.

Concord is being quietly updated on Steam

The news of Concord being updated on Steam was first posted by a canny user to Reddit, before the mods deleted the post. Naturally, many are assuming that this means they are preparing for the game to go free-to-play, which is really Sony’s only option if they want to recoup some of those expensive development costs.

Making the game free for everyone to play could potentially reignite curiosity and bring in a greater number of players due to the reduced entry barrier. This approach often encourages more individuals to try it out, some of whom might later invest in in-game items or cosmetics. Additionally, this strategy offers developers an opportunity to refine gameplay mechanics, address issues, and ultimately enhance the game’s overall reputation.

Similar game models have been employed previously, such as Star Wars: The Old Republic (launched in 2011), which switched to a free-to-play model in 2012, and Evolve (released in 2015), which transformed into Evolve Stage 2 in 2016. Likewise, Rocket League, initially launched in 2015, transitioned to a free-to-play model in 2020 with considerable success.

If the game isn’t going free-to-play, we really have no idea why they would bother updating it.

Would you give Concord a try, if it went free-to-play? Surely, just to see what all the fuss was about it, it would be worth it?
