Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone, the creator of Stardew Valley, has hinted at a possible sequel to the game down the line. Yet, he expresses a stronger preference for developing additional free updates for the initial release, as it presents less challenge and financial gain isn’t his primary concern.
Stardew Valley 2 is certainly on the cards
On Bobby Lee’s Tiger Belly podcast, Barone shared that it’s likely he’ll develop more content for Stardew Valley in the future. Although he’s currently taking a well-deserved break from the farming game to concentrate solely on his upcoming project, Haunted Chocolatier, he acknowledges that he will eventually return to Stardew Valley.
In an interview for his podcast, Barone hinted that a potential sequel to Stardew Valley could be developed at some undetermined time in the future. Given his continued support for Haunted Chocolatier, it seems likely that he may eventually revisit the farming game genre, but for now, he plans to focus on additional free updates for the initial version.
The game developer simplified by saying, “It’s far less complicated to expand Stardew Valley than to develop a completely new game. All the major components are already built, which can be tedious and not particularly enjoyable. When I create an update, it’s like adding spices to a recipe – ‘oh, let’s include this feature, let’s include that idea. How about rain with a green tint?’
Given the substantial earnings the initial Stardew Valley game brought to its developers, it’s reasonable to assume that a follow-up, Stardew Valley 2, would result in another significant financial windfall. However, contrary to this expectation, Barone shared that monetary gains no longer hold any appeal for him.
When asked about why Stardew updates would remain free, the developer replied, ‘Honestly, I’m not particularly concerned with money.’ In simpler terms, he doesn’t care much about it.
Barone, known for his work on Stardew Valley, has chosen to step away from farming games temporarily to focus on developing Haunted Chocolatier. He feels that he no longer wants to be confined by the label of “the Stardew Valley guy.” Although a release date for Haunted Chocolatier hasn’t been set, fans are eagerly anticipating another game from ConcernedApe.
