Rei Kawakubo has once again left an indelible mark on Paris Fashion Week with her extraordinary showcase. The renowned Japanese designer showcased the Fall/Winter 2025 collection for COMME des GARÇONS, demonstrating fashion as a form of artistic expression beyond boundaries. Her designs, characterized by large and abstract shapes, underscore Kawakubo’s exceptional talent in sculpture. The mantra at COMME des GARÇONS is ‘the more, the better,’ a principle that was validated with a standing ovation from an appreciative audience, leaving them spellbound.
20 times, Kawakubo crafted striking visuals using bold constructions, heavy layering, and geometric forms to create unique works of art. A heavenly choir from Japan echoed through a gritty Parisian building in the Opéra district, decorated with basic wooden seats and a plain white catwalk. As usual, Kawakubo allows the clothing to convey its own message, forgoing elaborate stage productions.
From the get-go, I was captivated by the initial ensemble showcasing crisscrossed fabrics that danced like flowing rivers. In the second glance, abstract motifs sprang to life in a geometrical dress paired with an oversized wide-brimmed hat. The third look saw tailored checks pulled aside and suspended mid-air, while velvet garments were stacked upon a boxing-inspired figure, accompanied by matching gloves. The ninth piece was a dramatic ball gown engulfed in black and white plaid, contrasted with vivid red tulle beneath. Floral patterns, stripes, and unusual shapes harmonized with other designs, each finished off with oversized headpieces that left quite an impression.
