As a seasoned gamer and a lifelong fan of The Karate Kid saga, hearing about potential spin-offs has me doing the splits with excitement! Cobra Kai has been an absolute game-changer, breathing new life into a classic series that I grew up watching.
Cobra Kai co-creator Hayden Schlossberg says more Karate Kid spin-off series could be in the works.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t hide my excitement! Netflix just dropped the first half of Cobra Kai’s grand finale, the sixth season. The next installment is scheduled for November 2024, and the final piece of this epic journey will follow in 2025. Can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Schlossberg discussed the possibility of revisiting The Karate Kid universe by creating additional spin-offs after the end of Cobra Kai.
What did Cobra Kai’s co-creator say about more Karate Kid spin-offs?
We frequently ponder creating spin-offs centered around Cobra Kai, considering its origins are rooted in The Karate Kid. Essentially, we took the antagonist from The Karate Kid, branched off that character, and built a new narrative around it. We believe we could do this with any of our show’s characters, and as we wrap up their current storylines, these ideas have certainly crossed our minds. We contemplate the enjoyment of tracking their future paths while also considering their past experiences.
One reason for incorporating the Miyagi box story into this season was to delve deeper into the life of Mr. Miyagi and spark numerous questions about his past. This has been a topic we’ve wanted to explore for quite some time. We’ve had discussions with Robert Mark Kamen, the writer of the original Karate Kid, who based the movie on his sensei who studied Okinawan karate, allowing us to gain valuable insights into Miyagi’s backstory for season six. Now that we’ve completed this phase, we can finally dive into these details. Until now, our primary focus has been on Cobra Kai and wrapping it up. As of now, we are in the process of editing the final episodes. Upon completion, we hope to unveil some intriguing developments.
Schlossberg has indicated that they are absolutely keen on producing a prequel for Mr. Miyagi, and have started brainstorming ideas about it.
“He went on to say, ‘Thus far, our attention has been centered on Cobra Kai.’ Once we complete that project, we’ll determine the direction for potential spin-offs. However, creating these spin-offs is something we’ve been eager to do; we just want to finalize Cobra Kai first before delving into those plans.”
