As a longtime wrestling fan and someone who has followed CM Punk’s career closely, I have to admit that his return to WWE has been one of the most surprising and intriguing developments in recent wrestling history. For years, it seemed unlikely that we would ever see him back in a WWE ring again after his controversial departure and legal battles.
At SummerSlam coming up, former WWE Champion CM Punk is preparing for his wrestling comeback against Drew McIntyre. Their feud in the WWE has generated much tension this year. Previously, it was believed that Punk’s return to WWE was an unlikely prospect.
Back in 2014, I, as a gamer who follows pro wrestling closely, was disappointed when Punk announced his exit from WWE. The way things unfolded made it even worse; they let him go on his wedding day! Can you believe that? It created quite a stir and left a bad taste in many fans’ mouths, myself included.
In simpler terms, CM Punk’s return to wrestling with AEW in 2021 was marred by behind-the-scenes disputes. Following two notable clashes, one involving The Elite and another with Jack Perry, AEW ended his employment last September.
I was taken aback when Punk made an unexpected comeback to WWE last November at Survivor Series in my beloved hometown of Chicago. Despite enduring an injury during the Royal Rumble, he’s managed to keep his place in the limelight on WWE shows. His long-standing feud with Drew McIntyre has remained a focal point, and I can hardly wait for their much-anticipated showdown at SummerSlam coming up soon.
About half a decade ago, it seemed unlikely that CM Punk would make a comeback to the WWE. However, this has now become a fact. Not long ago, Punk shared that Vince McMahon’s departure from his former position as Chairman significantly influenced his decision to return.
CM Punk reveals Vince McMahon’s exit paved his way back to WWE
In the year 2022, Vince McMahon, who was previously the chairman of WWE, suddenly announced his retirement amidst a scandal over hush money payments. Yet, in a surprising turn of events, McMahon came back to WWE at the beginning of the next year. However, this brief comeback was cut short in early 2024 when a sexual misconduct lawsuit caused him to step down from the board and sell his remaining shares in the promotion.
More recently, CM Punk attended the Comic-Con in San Diego. In an interaction with Denise Salcedo, he disclosed that Vince McMahon’s departure significantly influenced his WWE comeback. He explained, “It wasn’t something I was longing to do. A series of events had to unfold for the path to open up. The stars needed to align, a full moon was required. Many dominos toppled over in order for us to reach this point. Vince being absent…I believe it paved the way. It might have been one of the most significant factors. It wasn’t about me or him; it was…there’s a rich history there. Suddenly, one of us was taken out of the picture, and it altered many things.”
Approximately half a year ago, CM Punk spoke about WWE President Nick Khan’s involvement in his decision to come back during an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. More information has surfaced regarding Punk’s employment situation. Following his comeback, Punk agreed to a three-year contract that binds him to the WWE until 2026. Based on reports from PWInsider, negotiations are underway between Punk and the WWE for a fresh agreement that would be larger in scope than his current one.
