As a gamer with a deep-rooted passion for professional wrestling that spans over two decades, I find myself captivated by the rollercoaster ride of CM Punk‘s career. His latest return to WWE after a near decade-long absence has undeniably added a fresh and electrifying energy to the ring.
Recently, professional wrestler CM Punk spoke about the options he contemplated following his dismissal from AEW. After an absence of seven years, Punk rejoined the wrestling world with AEW in 2021, having left WWE following a disputed exit.
In other words, when Punk first arrived at AEW, it led to a surge in ratings and profits. He soon found himself embroiled in major disputes with notable figures like Darby Allin, Eddie Kingston, and MJF. However, things took an unexpected turn during his feud with Hangman Page in 2022. Hangman deviated from the scripted storyline, causing a rift between Punk and The Elite. This disagreement escalated into a physical altercation backstage involving The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega. Consequently, everyone involved received suspensions.
Nine months after taking a break, Punk reappeared but quickly became embroiled in another dispute, this time with AEW star Jack Perry. The disagreement centered around the use of glass in a match. According to reports, Punk intervened to prevent Perry from using authentic glass for safety reasons. However, Perry seemed resentful during the AEW All In event in London in 2023.
He made headlines by slamming HOOK onto a car windshield, emphasizing it was real glass and dismissing concerns with a “cry me a river” remark aimed at the camera. This prompted Punk to confront Perry backstage before his match against Samoa Joe, leading to a physical altercation.
As a result of this situation, Punk decided to leave AEW and rejoin WWE last November, marking nearly a decade since he was last there. More recently, Punk shared unexpected insights into his thoughts and intentions after being let go by All Elite Wrestling.
Recently, WWE legend CM Punk made an appearance on the No-Contest Wrestling podcast, hosted by O’Shea Jackson Jr. and TJ Jefferson. On this show, he discussed his frame of mind and his departure from All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Punk confessed that at first, he thought he had left professional wrestling behind.
CM Punk considered leaving wrestling following AEW termination
He explained, “Upon my departure from WWE in 2014, some might criticize me unfairly by saying, ‘He didn’t care about wrestling since he didn’t work the independents.’ But what else could I do? After all… It involves a bit of that skepticism, and also the question, who will pay me? Returning to work for just $60? Well, you see, I’m married now; I have a mortgage.” (lightly joking)
He went on to say, “After leaving AEW, I didn’t have a specific plan like, ‘I’m going to…’. Instead, I might have thought, ‘That’s it then.’ Following that, around August or September (2023), I took some time off. Then, in November, Nick Khan contacted me and asked, ‘When can you be available and free?’ To which I replied, ‘Nick, I was let go.’
CM Punk’s choice to stick with professional wrestling eventually brought him back to the WWE after almost a decade. Currently, he is deeply involved in a heated feud with Drew McIntyre. This weekend, these two prominent figures will square off at WWE Bad Blood in a Hell in a Cell match.
