Clayface Budget Revealed for Mike Flanagan & James Watkins’ DCU Movie

The estimated budget for the DCU Clayface movie has been revealed.

In September 2026, Clayface will make its way onto U.S. theater screens. This upcoming DC Universe movie is being helmed by director James Gunn and scripted by Mike Flanagan. Notably, it was just revealed that James Watkins, from Speak No Evil, has been appointed to direct the film.

What is the estimated budget for the DCU Clayface movie?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the DCU Clayface movie will have a budget of $40 million.

Compared to many comic book films, Gunn’s Superman movie appears to have a lower production budget, with Captain America: Brave New World and the 2019 Joker film having higher estimates of approximately $180 million and $55 million respectively. The specific budget for Gunn’s Superman project remains undisclosed.

According to an article from The Hollywood Reporter, the movie’s storyline revolves around a B-list actor in the film industry who uses an injection to stay relevant, unaware that it allows him to mold his face and body like clay, effectively transforming himself into a living sculpture.

As of now, no actor has been officially chosen to portray Clayface in the upcoming movie. However, it’s interesting to note that Alan Tudyk provides the voice for Clayface in the DCU Creature Commandos and James Gunn hinted that actors who voice significant animated characters within DCU projects might also play those roles in live-action. It’s important to mention that Tudyk also voices Clayface in the Harley Quinn show, but that series is not part of the DCU.

Gunn mentioned that Tudyk might portray a live-action character within the DC Universe. Since Tudyk often lends his voice to various characters, it’s conceivable that Gunn was talking about live-action Doctor Phosphorus as one of those roles instead.

In addition to Gunn, the production team for Clayface also includes Peter Safran, Matt Reeves from The Batman, and Lynn Harris.

Clayface will be released in United States theaters on September 11, 2026.
