In the approaching “Fantastic Four: First Steps”, set within a different reality, speculation among fans suggests possible sightings of additional heroes hailing from this alternate universe.
The movie features Pedro Pascal portraying Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn and Johnny Storm, with Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Gimm. This film takes place in a universe reminiscent of the 1960s imagination of Fantastic Four co-creator Jack Kirby. Director Matt Shakman told Empire Magazine that the team operates within their own unique universe, describing it as “wonderful and liberating”.
Instead of including superhero cameos, he vetoed the plan, stating that there are “truly no additional superheroes” and “no hidden references” in the movie. However, it’s been confirmed that the team will venture into Avengers: Doomsday, and Shakman admits, “I appreciate the interconnected Marvel Universe, but we have the opportunity to create something entirely fresh and distinct. Eventually, this world will merge with others, but for now, this is our unique niche.
It appears beneficial to first present a standalone film for these characters before integrating them fully into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Nevertheless, it has been reported that some viewers at CinemaCon last week are not pleased with the casting choices of Pedro Pascal and the female Silver Surfer.
Here’s what they had to say over at Film Threat:
Initially, the primary point of contention centered around Pedro Pascal’s interpretation of Reed Richards, as viewers felt it missed the mark when it came to embodying the character’s traditional leadership traits. Fans expressed disappointment with Pascal’s subdued and seemingly uncertain portrayal, as they were anticipating a more authoritative and intellectually powerful Reed Richards. Furthermore, Julia Garner’s role as Shalla-Bal, the female Silver Surfer, received criticism for its special effects, which were deemed inferior to Doug Jones’ performance in the 2007 film “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”. Despite these criticisms, the movie’s concept, featuring the Fantastic Four battling cosmic perils, still promises intrigue.
It was noted that the plot seems to offer a touch of emotional complexity, including Sue Storm’s pregnancy scenario. The performance of Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm was generally appreciated. Nevertheless, certain casting decisions were considered less than impressive, causing concern among some viewers that Fantastic Four: First Steps might struggle to captivate its audience completely despite its grand aspirations.
