Christie’s Controversial AI Art Auction Surpasses Estimates

Yesterday concluded Christie’s unique and debated auction, “Augmented Intelligence,” which focuses on artwork generated by artificial intelligence. This was the first time such a sale took place, accumulating approximately $729,000 USD. The final figure exceeded its initial projection by more than 20%.

The sale attracted a surge of novice collectors, predominantly from Generation Z and Millennials, who accounted for nearly half of the bidders. Moreover, more than one-third of the registrants were first-timers with Christie’s.

As a passionate art enthusiast, I was thrilled to see Refik Anadol’s “Machine Hallucinations – ISS Dreams – A” take the lead at an impressive $277,200 USD! This piece surpassed its anticipated price of $200,000 USD. Following closely, Holly Herndon & Mat Dryhurst’s “Embedding Study 1 & 2” diptych sold for $94,500 USD, also outperforming its estimated range.

In a recent announcement, Nicole Sales Giles, Vice President and Director of Digital Art Sales at Christie’s, clarified that Augmented Intelligence is intended to highlight exceptional artistic voices who are exploring the frontiers of technology and art. Additionally, it functions as a trial for AI-produced artwork in the auction marketplace.

As an ardent admirer, I must admit that the sale was mired in a whirlwind of debate. Merely days following the auction announcement last month, a collective of 6,500 artists penned an open letter, imploring the establishment to call off the event. Their primary contention was that “a significant number of artworks slated for auction were reportedly crafted using AI models, which are alleged to have been trained on copyrighted works without a proper license.

In reply to ARTnews’ query, the house stated: “The artists showcased in this sale possess robust, cross-disciplinary art portfolios, some of which are already featured in prestigious museum collections. The pieces up for auction employ artificial intelligence to augment their creative output.” Furthermore, several of the participating artists provided additional perspectives, challenging AI’s commonly held perception as a monolithic force.

Regardless of your stance on AI art within discussions, the surprising triumph of Augmented Intelligence implies that these pieces will endure and remain significant in the art market.
