‘Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams’ Exhibition Arrives in Seoul

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel like I’ve stepped into a dreamworld when I tell you about the incredible Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition that’s taken over Seoul’s Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). This place has been transformed into an enchanting voyage spanning nearly 80 years of Dior’s creative heritage. The mastermind behind this magical experience is OMA partner Shohei Shigematsu, and believe it or not, this is the fourth collaboration between Dior and his architecture firm following successful exhibits in Denver, Dallas, and Tokyo.

The Seoul edition of DDP’s spacious Art Hall 1 harmoniously combines the realm of Dior with Korean cultural traditions. Instead of sectioning off the area into typical galleries, the display follows a natural progression through themed spaces centered around “The Garden.

Drawing inspiration from the tranquil madang, or courtyard, found in traditional Korean hanok homes, “The Garden” presents an awe-inspiring 12-meter-tall moon jar, embodying harmony and minimalism. Inside, you’ll find a soothing projection dome and a forest made of hanji paper, carefully crafted by the talented Korean artist Hyun Joo Kim. This creates a peaceful, forward-thinking haven.

In each gallery, Dior’s heritage is reinvented using a distinctly Korean perspective. The “Dior Legacy” space features an undulating structure reminiscent of jogakbo patchwork, highlighting the creative directors who have shaped the House. The “Lady Dior” room takes inspiration from traditional red lacquerware cabinetry, converting modular components into sculptural displays for the famous bag. Other standout areas include “30 Avenue Montaigne,” “The New Look,” “Miss Dior,” and “Colorama.

Showcasing a fusion of style, ambiance, and tradition, the exhibition titled “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” has commenced its public viewing at Dongdaemun Design Plaza.
