Chiyaan Vikram starrer Thangalaan moves ahead for OTT release after Madras High Court lifts ban on it

As a dedicated movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of Indian cinema, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and anticipation at the news that Thangalaan is finally set to see the light of day on an OTT platform. The film’s journey has been nothing short of tumultuous, with its release being delayed due to legal hurdles and public speculation.

Chiyaan Vikram’s film, Thangalaan, was warmly accepted by audiences across India, and each performance was met with appreciation. Unfortunately, despite this positive reception, the film struggled to garner significant box office success and audience response. In response, it was decided to release the film on an OTT platform. However, this plan was halted when the Madras High Court imposed a ban on it following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by someone from Thiruvalluvar. The allegation was that the movie disparaged the Vaishnavite community.

It appears the most recent update is that the ban on this movie has officially been lifted, allowing it to move forward with its online streaming release. The petition mentioned earlier, which was initially submitted, has been retracted, so there should be no further obstacles preventing a smooth launch of the film on an OTT platform.

As a devoted admirer, let me shed some light for those uninitiated: A person named Porkodi suggested that the term Thangalaan symbolizes Buddhism. From there, they present notable contrasts between Buddhism and Vaishnavites, which, in a playful twist, seems to poke fun at the latter, implying a preference for the sanctity of Buddhists over Vaishnavites.

Ultimately, by October 19th, the court completed drafting the case and, after thorough examination, chose to dismiss it because the movie had already been approved by the Central Board of Film Certification. Since they had thoroughly scrutinized it, no additional ban could be imposed on this film.

According to reports, the movie directed by Pa Ranjith looks set for release on an Over-the-Top (OTT) platform. There’s talk it might debut during Diwali, but these are just rumors for now. No official word has been given about the exact release date or the OTT service that will carry the film.

Previously, in a chat with the media at a function, Gnanavel Raja, the film producer, subtly suggested that Thangalaan might be making its way to Netflix. At that time, he had ruled out any potential delays for the Chiyaan Vikram’s release and assured us it would hit screens during Diwali.

The production team announced that Netflix plans to release the movie “Thangalaan” during Diwali. They chose this festival season because the film is quite significant. However, some popular YouTubers are alleging problems with “Thangalaan”. Interestingly, they often point out issues even when there might not be any in reality.

In addition to Chiyaan Vikram, who played five distinct characters in the movie, Thangalaan also featured actors such as Pasupathi, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, Hari Krishnan, and several others.
