As a dedicated fan of Chinese dramas, I have been captivated by the intricacies and emotional depths portrayed in “The Princess Royal.” The final episodes of this series, featuring Zhao Jinmai and Zhang Linghe, were nothing short of riveting.
In simpler terms, the Chinese drama “The Princess Royal,” starring Zhao Jinmai and Zhang Linghe, concluded its last episodes on July 13, 2024. The series’ trailer suggests that Li Rong (Zhao Jinmai) and Pei Wenxuan (Zhang Linghe) are brought back to life after being ensnared in conspiracies and dying. In earlier episodes, their love for each other blossoms anew. Episode 40 primarily explores Li Rong’s journey to the throne.
In the last episode, Li Rong is overjoyed when Pei Wenxuan arrives at her home, causing her to burst into tears upon their reunion. Alongside her are Li Chuan and Zhenzhen.
Based on my extensive experience in ancient Chinese warfare and politics, I can infer from Zhenzhen’s account that Li Rong has reason to be alarmed. General Qin Lin, it seems, has not only taken control of Xiao Su’s troops but has also been the mastermind behind his assassination. Furthermore, Qin Lin had sent Zhenzhen away, presumably to ensure her safety and to aid Li Rong in a moment of crisis. These revelations paint a troubling picture, suggesting that Qin Lin is a formidable adversary who will soon be returning to Huajing with a significant military force. Li Rong must prepare for battle, taking into account the strength and tactics of his enemy. My own life experiences in similar situations have taught me that underestimating an adversary can be a costly mistake. It is crucial that Li Rong acts swiftly and wisely to protect his people and territory.
As Consort Rou and Su Rongqing searched the palace relentlessly for the imperial jade seal, tensions boiled over. When Rou learned that the Emperor wouldn’t cede the throne to her son, Cheng, her fury reached a breaking point. Waving a knife menacingly at his neck, she demanded the throne. The Emperor sternly reminded her that even if they obtained the seal, Cheng lacked the ability to rule effectively. Disappointed and enraged, Rou attacked the Emperor with the knife, ultimately piercing his heart. In agony, he disclosed the location of the hidden seal.

Rongqing takes the seal out of the hidden compartment. But before they can flee from the spot, Li Rong, along with Wenxuan, Li Chuan, and Zhenzhen, arrive. Li Rong can not believe that Rou hurt her own husband in front of her children. She promises to let them go if she doesn’t kill the Emperor. Ruayue, Rou’s daughter, falls on her knees and begs for mercy in front of Li Rong.
Rou unveils that the Emperor had never held affection for her due to her humble origins, instead harboring contempt. In a sudden rage, she charges at Li Rong with the intent to hurt her. However, just as she was about to inflict harm, Zhenzhen swiftly interferes, piercing Rou with an arrow through her heart. Following Rou’s demise, Ruayue descends into madness.
Do Zhang Linghe & Zhao Jinmai end up together?
As we engage in an intense battle, I, Wenxuan, confront Rongqing. For years, I’ve harbored a deep-rooted hatred towards him, and as our fight escalates, it becomes evident that the feeling is mutual. I can’t fathom why Rongqing continues to resist when he’s clearly in harm’s way. Despite knowing that the noble families were in the wrong, I chose to align myself with them. Their deceit went so far as to present a fake Li Cheng for their nefarious objectives.
Rongqing openly admits that he has nothing left to lose. His love for the princess surpassed all others, leaving him powerless to prevent her marriage to Wenxuan. The confrontation concludes tragically as Wenxuan stabs Rongqing to death.
What happens in The Princess Royal episode 40’s ending?
As the princess makes her way there, she turns a blind eye to Rongqing during the duel yet feels compassion for him as he lies dying. It is then that Rongqing confesses his longtime love for her, having fallen for her when they met at the imperial study as children. Li Rong vows to transform the system and build a society free from discrimination. In his final moments, Su Rongqing sets the palace ablaze, taking his own life along with it.
Following the Emperor’s passing, Li Chuan assumes the throne. After three years, he abdicates and journeys north with Zhenzhen. Meanwhile, Li Rong climbs the throne to reign as monarch, and Wenxuan is appointed her trusted advisor. The narrative concludes with their wedding.
All 40 episodes of The Princess Royal are available to stream on Netflix, Youku, and Viki.
