As a gamer with an insatiable appetite for historical dramas, I must say that A Lonely Hero’s Journey has piqued my interest from the very first episode. The rich narrative, coupled with the intricate political backdrop of wartime China, promises an immersive viewing experience.

In August 2024, the Chinese war-time drama titled “A Lonely Hero’s Journey” was premiered, featuring actors like Joseph Zeng, Zang Songwen, and Chen Duling. This drama is a narrative about Gu Yizhong, portrayed by Joseph Zeng, who becomes the symbol of resistance against Japanese oppression in his town, Suzhou. The initial episodes revolve around him being interrogated.

In this installment, the storyteller introduces the current scenario in Suzhou during 1941, where the city is under both Japanese occupation and the rule of Wang Jingwei’s puppet government. Moreover, it is also dealing with spies from Chongqing and the CPC, all vying for control. After the Japanese failed to subdue and the CPC fiercely resisted their advances, a new military base emerged. Amidst this turmoil, Gu Yizhong, a young scion of the Gu family, is unwittingly caught up in these events.

In the following scene, we find Xiao Junxia, head of the CPC’s Iron Blood Action Group, strategizing a rescue mission for a high-ranking intelligence officer with his team. Meanwhile, Yizhong and Ruoteng make their way to the clandestine base. Armed weapons accompany Ruoteng, while Yizhong offers a map detailing the park where the operation is set to unfold. However, the map’s organization receives criticism. Eager to participate in the mission, Yizhong requests to join, but Junxia initially denies him due to his non-membership within the group. Eventually, after being persuaded by Ruoteng, Junxia grants Yizhong an opportunity to prove himself during the operation.

The procedure happens during the night. A handful of individuals from the group secretly enter the park at this time, with Ruoteng assigned to monitor the road. Simultaneously, Zhou Zhifei, head of Suzhou’s agent station, and Lian Jinhai, operations chief, maintain a vigilant eye on their activities.

Why does Joseph Zeng get investigated?

Following a violent clash between the two groups, everyone except Yizhong and Junxia ends up incapacitated. Yizhong locates an exit window that he can remove, allowing him to flee, while Junxia chooses to stay behind to ensure his companion’s safety and escape. Before being apprehended, Junxia requests that Yizhong seek out someone called Eagle. Wounded in the leg, Yizhong manages to reach Ruoteng’s vehicle but is ultimately captured just before making an escape by military police. Somehow, Ruoteng successfully evades capture.

In captivity, Yizhong endures harsh questioning and torment, yet he remains silent. His father, Gu Xixing, also declined involvement in the peace movement. The authorities question him about Eagle, but he keeps quiet. As Yizhong manages to decipher that someone from their team betrayed them to the police, his torture intensifies even more.

What happens in A Lonely Hero’s Journey episode 1’s ending?

1. Ruoteng is being threatened, yet he remains firm. Before the discussion could progress any further, General Advisor Kondo ordered one of his men to seize Yizhong. Yizhong’s father was a highly regarded military general who once defied the emperor. It seems that Kondo aims to influence him through his son.

Simultaneously, Yizhong’s sister Gu Huizhong, who was an undercover CPC contact, found herself expecting a child. Unfortunately, her secret hideout was damaged by the military. As a result, she had nowhere to go but back to her father’s house. However, he denied her request for shelter.
