China’s Ne Zha 2 Beats Inside Out 2’s Box Office, Eyes $2 Billion Worldwide

The animated Chinese film “Ne Zha 2” has broken records to become the highest-earning animated movie ever. As of February 18, it has grossed approximately 12.3 billion yuan ($1.69 billion), surpassing the box office revenue of its predecessor, “Inside Out 2″ (released in 2024).

Ne Zha 2 is the highest grossing animated movie after beating Inside 2

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Ne Zha 2 has made history as the highest-grossing animated film ever! According to data from Maoyan, a well-known ticketing platform (as reported by NBC), this masterpiece directed by Yang Yu, also recognized as Jiaozi, took the Chinese cinemas by storm on January 29, 2025. Since then, it has amassed an astounding $1.69 billion at the box office! What a remarkable achievement!

The figure we’re discussing takes into account earnings from before release and foreign sales, but it’s important to note that the lion’s share of this movie’s box office revenue comes from within China. This contrasts with movies like Inside Out 2 and other top-grossing animated films, which are predominantly Hollywood productions. Their total box office earnings typically stem from a mix of U.S. and international sales.

The movies Ne Zha 2 and Ne Zha are based on a 16th-century Chinese novel called The Investiture of the Gods. The storyline of Ne Zha 2 centers around the titular character, a young boy whose spirit was rescued together with that of Ao Bing following the events depicted in the first film. Unfortunately, their physical bodies were destroyed. The solution to this problem is found in the enigmatic seven-colored lotus.

Currently ranked 8th among the top-earning movies overall, Ne Zha 2 is poised to climb higher due to its current momentum and may even cross the $2 billion mark. At China’s box office, it has already outperformed Avengers: Endgame as the highest-grossing IMAX release ever (as reported by Variety).

In the voice-over for Ne Zha 2, Lü Yanting portrays the young Nezha, while Joseph Cao voices the older Nezha. Additionally, Han Mo is heard as Ao Bing, along with other cast members.
