Apple TV+ has unveiled the initial teaser trailer for the highly anticipated historical drama “Chief of War,” starring Jason Momoa, known for his role as Aquaman. This is Momoa’s latest project with the streaming service, following his lead roles in the sci-fi series “See” from 2019 to 2022. The much-awaited “Chief of War” will make its debut on August 1, 2025.

The narrative unfolds the extraordinary and unique account of the unification and colonization of Hawaii at the start of the 19th century, as seen through indigenous eyes. “Chief of War” is a deeply personal undertaking for creators Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, who both hail from native Hawaiian lineage, according to the official summary.

Notably, the main cast is predominantly Polynesian, featuring actors such as Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and Benjamin Hoetjes.

The show “Chief of War” is jointly written and overseen by Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, with Doug Jung serving as the head writer. The sweeping narrative explores Hawaii’s unification and colonization from an indigenous perspective. The series is also overseen by Jung, Francis Lawrence, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Erik Holmberg, and Justin Chon, who additionally directs the first two episodes.
