Chicago PD showrunner has an update on a real One Chicago crossover

As a dedicated fan who has weathered the highs and lows of the One Chicago universe for decades, I can confidently say that the prospect of another crossover event is nothing short of exhilarating. The last time we had a proper crossover was like a distant memory, a fleeting moment in time that feels almost surreal now.

In the One Chicago universe, our last major three-way crossover occurred back in October 2019. Since then, there have been brief instances of crossovers, but the full-fledged event hasn’t happened again.

Following this, the world experienced a halt, making filming more challenging. Eventually, in 2023, strike action took place, resulting in fewer episodes during the season. However, this autumn seems to have returned to some semblance of normalcy, and we might expect full seasons for our beloved shows again. Does that increase the possibility of another One Chicago crossover event?

Chicago PD boss wants a One Chicago crossover to happen

Gwen Sigan, the producer in charge of Chicago PD, shared with TVLine that there’s a strong desire for a special crossover episode. Conversations are ongoing regarding the best way and ideal timing to pull it off.

It will just be about if it all aligns and works out. But yeah, hopefully.

There are a lot of moving parts in the world of TV. We have filming schedules, locations, and the costs of production to factor in. A crossover event can lead to the cast and crews working longer hours, and this leads to a higher wage budget.

Currently, NBC is exploring methods to reduce production expenses. One potential solution being considered is having actors appear less frequently in each episode. For instance, in Chicago PD season 12, Burgess was absent for the first two episodes, and in season 11, Torres was missing for the first three episodes. With a major crossover event planned, this could potentially cause complications regarding costs.

Here’s a possible way of paraphrasing it: It seems everyone is up for a collaboration, but whether or not it will take place depends on favorable circumstances. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and see if the involved teams can come up with an agreement.

I’d prefer a crossover similar to “Infection.” Most crossovers have primarily centered on each individual show. However, “Infection” was unique as it combined elements from all three shows, creating an immersive experience that felt like one continuous, three-hour episode dedicated to resolving the issue.

On Wednesdays, starting at 8/7 central time, you can watch “One Chicago” on NBC. If you miss an episode, don’t worry! You can catch up on all three shows the following day on Peacock.
