Chicago Fire season 13, episode 2 recap and review

As a long-time fan of Chicago Fire and someone who’s seen more than my fair share of firehouse dramas, I must say this recent turn of events has me intrigued. Kidd’s got her hands full with Damon, and it seems like Severide is caught in the crossfire.

Tonight, once again, I’m diving back into the action-packed world of Firehouse 51, this time in Chicago Fire season 13, episode 2. Tonight, it’s Damon and me teaming up with Severide, and Violet stepping up as the one in charge for a particularly challenging call. Here’s a quick recap of the thrilling events that unfolded.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Chicago Fire season 13, episode 2.

During the course of the night, several significant events unfold. When Damon goes against Kidd’s instructions, he seeks assistance from Severide instead. This act could potentially create a rift between Severide and Kidd, and it’s evident that Severide is aware of this situation.

In more straightforward terms, Violet and Novak navigate challenging circumstances, providing an opportunity for Violet to demonstrate her leadership skills, while simultaneously offering Carver a glimpse into what he may be overlooking.

As a gamer, I always look forward to the comedic moments in each episode, often provided by Mouch or Herrmann. Typically, it’s Herrmann who delivers the chuckles, especially when he’s on the hunt for a unique scent to keep things interesting with Cindy.

Hermmann is honest about not taking the Captains test in Chicago Fire

During the premiere of season 13 of “Chicago Fire,” Herrmann explained that he was unwell prior to the Captains test, which is why he didn’t participate. However, his facial expressions suggested he wasn’t entirely truthful, and it wasn’t long before he confessed everything to Mouch.

After passing the Captain’s exam, he’s nearly at the point for the Chief’s test. This would involve filling in for Boden, which terrifies Herrmann. It’s heartwarming to witness Herrmann admit that no one can truly replace Boden.

It’s evident that Boden picked Herrmann for this task, and indeed, Herrmann is capable. With a motivational speech, Herrmann agrees to tackle the upcoming test. During the entire episode, Mouch dedicates every spare moment to preparing for the lieutenants exam, while Herrmann, following Cindy’s visit to the firehouse and her expressing satisfaction with his scent, spends time searching for his unique fragrance instead. What is this mysterious scent?

After surveying the firehouse, Herrmann recognizes that he should follow up on the patient from the boating incident. This discovery results in an uncomfortable situation as Herrmann struggles to find a tactful way of inquiring about the patient’s condition. The revelation that it was prescription cream for psoriasis only intensifies his concern, prompting him to offer to purchase it.

In this particular instance, the significance of it couldn’t be overstated for me. Many shows tend to overlook the true essence of what sustains a marriage – effective communication and emotional bonding. However, the show consistently demonstrates that these elements are crucial, as we witnessed in this episode. Cindy managed to arrange some time alone for them by looking after the children, and Herrmann obliged with the instructions regarding the scent, showing their deep connection.

Despite Mouch not departing from Firehouse 51, there’s a sequel involving him. It seems Mouch yearns to advance in rank, yet he can only do so if Herrmann gets his promotion first. This narrative emphasizes the family bond within the firehouse, but also highlights each character’s individual aspirations. Rest assured, Herrmann is preparing to take that exam for his own promotion.

Damon disobeys orders, putting Severide and Kidd at odds

The initial emergency tonight is connected to a boat mishap. Without hesitation, Damon dashes towards the scene, disregarding Kidd’s instructions. Although it seems like he might not have heard Kidd ask him to stand down, he eventually acknowledges that he defied the order. His eagerness was fueled by the desire to participate in the unfolding events.

In Damon’s perspective, he suspects that Kidd holds a grudge against him. Therefore, when Kidd informs Damon about running drills with Squad 3, Damon assumes it’s all due to Severide’s machinations. Interestingly, it turns out to be Kidd’s plan, and she openly acknowledges her motives are self-serving. She aims to challenge Damon, but also wants him to experience the workings of Squad 3 simultaneously.

It appears that Damon lacks readiness for this profession. He may aspire to follow in his elder brother’s footsteps, but he should put in the necessary effort. As for Kidd, she requires a robust truck, given that Dom is on the chase and has pointed out the high turnover rate with her vehicle.

It’s not entirely accurate to discuss turnover as an issue, since many factors beyond her control have contributed to it. For instance, Casey left, Gallo moved due to personal matters, and the arrangement with Gallo’s initial replacement last season didn’t go as planned. This situation has no reflection on Kidd’s leadership abilities.

I’m hoping there’s no issue between Dom and Kidd, as his concerns might stem from previous experiences or incidents similar to those in Miami, rather than her being a woman.

Cruz finally talks to Severide about the Damon problem

My favorite moment was Cruz finally stepping up to share his fears with Severide about Damon. It’s not that Cruz is jealous. In fact, Cruz is just looking out for his lieutenant and his friend.

For a while now, Cruz has played the role of the protective older sibling. He feels it’s his duty to watch over his younger brother and do whatever he can to compensate for him receiving less than his fair share. It seems to Cruz that Severide is doing exactly that, and I have to agree with him on this point.

This conversation between Severide and Kidd reveals that Damon had been deceiving Kidd by disregarding orders. It’s heartening to witness this exchange. Given their shared history, both Severide and Kidd have faced numerous challenges together. This instance demonstrates Severide’s development as a character, as he is now ready to admit his errors. Previously, he might have kept the truth hidden for a long time, but he’s choosing to face the consequences of his actions this time.

This situation seems to spark anger within Damon towards Severide. While Damon appears to carry a heavy load of past issues, it seems we’re not privy to their nature. It seems that Severide insists they can’t work together at the same firehouse and one must depart – it wouldn’t be Severide, would it? This decision is likely to create more complications for Kidd, though.

Tensions continue between Dom Pascal and his wife in Chicago Fire

From the outset, it’s apparent that Dom and his spouse aren’t enjoying the best relationship. In this second episode, we see her paying a visit to the firehouse. There, she hands him a key and expresses regret for switching the locks. It appears there might be some mental issues at play, given my impression of their interaction. The marriage seems to be toxic, given her comment about being “in a mood” as the reason for changing the locks.

Previously, Dom encountered an acquaintance named Monica Vale, who expressed sympathy about the breakup of Dom’s marriage. It appears that Monica was the one who disclosed this information to someone else, and it seems like there might be some tension or drama between them due to Dom’s reaction. However, it is not explicitly stated whether Monica had an affair with Dom or if they are attempting to reconcile after one.

The episode concluded in a manner that left us with more queries than solutions, making me eager for next week to come quickly!

Chicago Fire airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
