As a seasoned horror enthusiast with an affinity for films that leave me gripping my seat, I can confidently say that 2024 has delivered its first horror MUST-SEE contender in the form of “Strange Darling“. Having grown up watching Kyle Gallner’s chilling performances in classics like “The Haunting in Connecticut” and “Jennifer’s Body”, it’s thrilling to see him return to the genre once again.

“The Enigmatic One”

Mollner both wrote and directed the film titled “Strange Darling“. He gained recognition for his debut feature, “Outlaws and Angels“, which features Chad Michael Murray in the cast. This Miramax and Spooky Pictures production was overseen by Former Miramax CEO Bill Block, Chris Ivan Cevic, Steven Schneider, and Roy Lee. The movie made its debut at Fantastic Fest in 2023. Its theatrical release starts on August 23, and it currently boasts a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Title rephrased as: “Bewildering Love Story”: Unraveling the deception, a seemingly innocent one-night stand becomes intertwined with a ruthless serial killer’s deadly rampage.

The movie was shot on 35mm film by Emmy and Screen Actors Guild award nominee Giovanni Ribisi, who has a cameo. Gallner (Smile, Scream 5) stars as the Demon, with Willa Fitzgerald (The House of Usher, Scream -the series) as the Lady. The movie also stars Barbara Hershey, Ed Begley Jr., Jason Patric, Madison Beaty, Bianca Santos, and Steven Michael Quezada.

The trailer reveals that this portrayal is based on actual events, specifically the last-known murders committed by the most productive and distinctive American serial killer of the 21st century.

Strange Darling soundtrack

On August 23, the official soundtrack for the movie “Strange Darling” will be made available, matching its release date. This album includes a poignant, melodious rendition of “Love Hurts,” a song initially sung by the Everly Brothers in 1960 and Nazareth in 1974. Notably, Emmy Lou Harris and Graham Parsons have reimagined this classic arrangement for this soundtrack. The cover version is performed by Zberg, who was once part of The Like, along with Academy Award-winning Keith Carradine. You can hear it for yourself right here.

Zberg

Zberg started out in bands like Mark Ronson’s teenage girl group, The Like, and LA dream-pop band Phases. Now, she’s made a name for herself with her own successful solo career. Her music has been showcased in movies and TV shows, such as the Grammy-nominated album “Aurora” from Prime Video’s Emmy-winning series “Daisy Jones & The Six”. The soundtrack for the film “Strange Darling” is her first solo soundtrack.

Keith Carradine

David Carradine belongs to the acting dynasty known as the Carradines, which encompasses his father John, brothers Christopher and Robert, half-brothers Bruce, David, and Michael Bowen. Although he’s widely recognized for several memorable characters such as Wild Bill Hickok in HBO’s Deadwood, Frank Lundy on Showtime’s Dexter, and Penny’s father on CBS’ The Big Bang Theory, David Carradine is also a skilled musician.

It’s reported that David, his brother, stated that Keith was skilled enough to play any musical instrument, even complex ones like bagpipes and the French horn. Carradine combined his passion for music with his acting profession, earning a Golden Globe and an Oscar for the song “I’m Easy” in Nashville. He had a short-lived career in music, putting out two albums titled I’m Easy (1976) and Lost & Found (1978), both under Asylum Records.

Don’t miss Strange Darling in theaters and its outstanding soundtrack on August 23.
