Chanel J12 Receives Midnight-Blue Makeover

Chanel redesigns its J12 ceramic watch in a special, midnight-blue edition, marking the 25th year anniversary of this iconic design.

Initially launched in 2000, the iconic J12 model is recognized for its luxurious status thanks to its distinctive ceramic casing and band design. Typically, this collection is only offered in white or black, but to celebrate its anniversary, a deep, opulent blue color was created across nine new versions. This unique shade of blue was developed by Chanel. The watch also comes in high-end watchmaking editions that include blue sapphires and a diamond-encrusted tourbillon. Additionally, there’s an ultra-exclusive version that is almost entirely transparent with blue sapphires scattered throughout. Speaking about the new color, Frédéric Grangié, president of Chanel Watches and Fine Jewelry, mentioned, “From the beginning, we knew we could create other colors. We are doing so. However, the color that we bring to market must remain. It needs to endure. Thus, the J12 first appeared in black, then white, and for its 25th anniversary, it’s blue.

Grangie also commented on the unique blue edition of the various J12 models, stating, “The J12 Bleu has a distinct appearance and texture when compared to its black and white counterparts. It’s a significant departure, with its matte and slightly satin finish. I believe existing J12 clients will appreciate this new model, but it could also attract a fresh, diverse clientele.”

Initially conceptualized as a personal endeavor, the J12 was birthed in 2000 from the creative mind of Jacques Helleu, who served as the artistic director for Chanel’s fragrances, beauty, watches, and jewelry at the time. Inspired by the sleek lines of J-Class yachts, the design of the J12 watch was born. Grangie reflected on its enduring legacy, “After 25 years, the world of watches is finally acknowledging the J12. Despite maintaining the same model and reference design for a quarter of a century, it has proven to be a timeless classic.”
