In a blog post published on Wednesday, the creators of Celeste, known as Extremely OK Games, have shared that they are cancelling their upcoming game, Earthblade.
Earthblade was designed as a spiritual follow-up to Celeste, adopting its pastel pixel art aesthetic and Metroidvania gameplay mechanics.
Last year at The Game Awards, we got our first glimpse of the game, revealing it centers around protagonist Névoa as he navigates through a devastated Earth on detailed 2D stages, all while maintaining a somber atmosphere.
Disagreement about the IP of Celeste
Explaining their decision, the developer wrote:
We made this decision in December and felt it best to wait until now to announce it. For us on the inside we’ve had some time to process, grieve, and work toward accepting this, although that process is nonlinear and still ongoing.
In the article, it is noted that there is a dispute over the intellectual property ownership of Celeste, which involves Maddy Thorson, Noel Berry (current members of Extremely OK Games), and Pedro Medeiros (former art director).
After finding a solution, both parties decided it was best for them to part ways as well, and so Medeiros moved on from the team in November, focusing on a new project titled “Neverway”.
Focus on smaller projects
Despite the dispute not being the only cause for canceling “Earthblade”, it led Extremely OK Games to carefully consider if persisting with its completion was the best choice.
In addition to other team members departing from the company in 2024, Thorson and Berry were left as the sole employees. This situation made them recognize a need to concentrate on managing “more manageable initiatives” instead.
Looking forward, the team wrote:
Celeste’s success applied pressure on us to deliver something bigger and better with Earthblade, and that pressure is a large part of why working on it has become so exhausting. Pedro isn’t to blame for this – in fact the split with him has given us the clarity to see that we have lost our way, and the opportunity to admit defeat. I feel many ways about it, but one big feeling is undoubtedly relief.
Did you play Celeste? Have you been excited for the upcoming Earthblade?
