Cate Blanchett Says ‘No One Got Paid Anything’ on Lord of the Rings

As a die-hard fan who has followed Cate Blanchett’s illustrious career since her early days, I must say that her recent revelation about the financial aspect of the Lord of the Rings trilogy left me both amazed and amused. Here we have an Academy Award-winning actress, one of the most respected and successful in Hollywood, casually mentioning that she “basically got free sandwiches” for portraying Galadriel, one of the most iconic roles in cinematic history.

Cate Blanchett says that “no one got paid anything” on Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies.

Cate Blanchett, currently featured in Eli Roth’s Borderlands film, has a rich history in fantasy roles, notably Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. This epic series consists of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” (2001), “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (2002), and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003).

Later on, she resumed her character in Jackson’s Hobbit series, comprising the movies: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (released in 2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (in 2013), and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (which came out in 2014).

What did Cate Blanchett say about her Lord of the Rings paycheck?

In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Blanchett was queried about which film among her projects yielded the highest earnings for her.

As a dedicated gamer, I’d put on my detective hat and say, “When someone suggested it might have been The Lord of the Rings, Blanchett shot back, ‘You gotta be joking! Nobody was compensated for that film.'”

When inquired about receiving a share of the backend from Cohen, Blanchett responded, “Absolutely not! That was long before all that. No, nothing at all. I simply wanted to collaborate with the director of Braindead. To be honest, I essentially received free sandwiches and got to keep my earrings.”

As a die-hard fan, I’d love to share my thoughts on a gem of a film titled “Braindead” (or “Dead Alive” as it was known in North America). This 1992 masterpiece, directed by the talented Peter Jackson, is a unique blend of comedy, horror, and zombies that truly stands out. The movie features an exceptional cast, including Timothy Balme, Diana Peñalver, Elizabeth Moody, and Ian Watkin, who all delivered unforgettable performances.

As I, Jackson, step into the role as executive producer for “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” the upcoming animated film hitting U.S. theaters this December, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. This story takes place before the events of my trilogy and follows the life of King Helm Hammerhand, brilliantly voiced by Brian Cox. Can’t wait to see it unfold on the big screen!
