In a recent development, Vertical Entertainment has revealed the trailer for “The New Boy,” an Australian spiritual drama set to hit U.S. cinemas. Originally premiering in Australian theatres in July 2023, this film will now be screened in selected American theaters on May 23, with its Video On Demand (VOD) release scheduled for May 30.
This thought-provoking drama stars two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett.

What happens in The New Boy trailer?
In the video, Cate Blanchett portrays a rebellious nun who adopts an unnamed Aboriginal child as her ward. This young boy finds it challenging to blend with his peers at the monastery until he unexpectedly uncovers his extraordinary abilities. Alongside Blanchett, the talented cast includes Aswan Reid, Deborah Mailman, Wayne Blair, Shane Mckenzie Brady, Tyrique Brady, Tyler Spencer, Kyle Miller, Laiken Woolmington, and others.
Written and helmed by Warwick Thornton, “The New Boy” premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. It now boasts a Tomatometer score of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only does Cate Blanchett star in this film, but she also plays a role behind the scenes as a producer, alongside Lorenzo De Maio, Georgie Pym, Kath Shelper, and Andrew Upton. The production is overseen by executive producers Coco Francini and Gretel Packer.
The plot unfolds in 1940s Australia, at a secluded monastery operating as a mission for Indigenous children, overseen by an unorthodox nun named Sister Eileen. An unexpected arrival comes under cover of night – a boy who seems to possess unique abilities. However, the boy’s indigenous spirituality clashes with the monastery’s Christian teachings, making his mysterious powers a source of danger. Sister Eileen is confronted by a challenging decision: whether to uphold her religious beliefs or acknowledge the truth in the boy, as she navigates a tale of spiritual conflict and the price of survival.
