According to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, Steven Spielberg was persuaded by the idea that streaming platforms can produce blockbuster films.
Back in December 2024, I got my hands on an action-packed thriller movie titled “Carry-On,” streamed on Netflix. This masterpiece was skillfully directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and boasted a star-studded cast that included Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, Sofia Carson, and Danielle Deadwyler. Notably, it was produced under the banner of Amblin Entertainment, the esteemed production company co-founded by Spielberg.
How did Carry-On change Steven Spielberg’s mind about streaming?
According to Sarandos, as reported by Variety, Steven said, “Experiencing Carry-On was similar for me to having a major box office success. The way people spoke about it mirrored the feeling I get from a hit film!
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but echo Steven Spielberg’s sentiments about streaming services. Back in 2022, he voiced his concerns to The New York Times, stating that during the pandemic, streaming platforms capitalized on the situation by increasing their subscriptions to unprecedented highs. Simultaneously, some of my favorite filmmakers, including Spielberg himself, found themselves in a difficult position as their movies were denied traditional theatrical releases.
In a new partnership, Amblin Entertainment and Netflix are teaming up to produce The Thursday Murder Club, an upcoming crime comedy film. This movie is being helmed by Chris Columbus (known for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone). Originating from Richard Osman’s 2020 novel, the star-studded cast includes Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, David Tennant, Celia Imrie, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Tom Ellis, and others.
The exact launch date for “The Thursday Murder Club” movie remains undisclosed, but it’s anticipated to premiere sometime this year. On the other hand, you can already watch “Carry-On” by streaming it on Netflix.
In the story of ‘Carry-On’, a youthful Transportation Security Administration officer, played by Egerton, struggles to stay one step ahead of a secretive traveler who forces him to allow a potentially hazardous item onto a flight on Christmas Eve.
