Captain America: Brave New World Flops with $100M and Lowest MCU Critic Scores!

Disney’s fresh installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe titled Captain America: Brave New World topped the box office charts this weekend, but it has not received a warm reception from critics. The movie has been given one of the lowest initial ratings in the franchise, scoring 51% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, which is significantly lower than the impressive debut many Marvel Universe fans were anticipating.

Compared to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Eternals, which scored only 46% and 47% respectively, The Marvels from 2023 has a much higher rating of 62%. On Metacritic, the picture looks even bleaker. Captain America: Brave New World is currently the lowest-rated MCU film ever, with a score of 42/100. Even non-MCU Marvel films like Madame Web and both Morbius and Kraven have higher scores, with 35/100 each.

It seems that the film’s financial success in the short term may be uncertain, as Disney has stated the movie had a production budget of $180 million, although additional reshoots and increased marketing costs have raised doubts about this figure. If we believe Disney’s estimate, the film would need to generate over $360 million in revenue just to cover its expenses, which is a significant amount for any film. It’s worth noting that marketing costs are often equal to production costs, and a portion of ticket sales goes to the venues both domestically and internationally, making it challenging for the movie to turn a profit.

The film is projected to have made approximately $100 Million in its initial three days domestically, with an additional $12 Million from previews. With today’s President’s Day holiday revenue added, industry experts predict it could reach even higher figures. Already, they are referring to it as one of the top four highest-grossing President’s Day releases in history.

The film “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” was said to have a significantly larger budget of approximately $388.8 million, yet it only grossed $476.1 million worldwide, indicating that it didn’t initially recoup its costs – a rarity for films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s theatrical releases. Contrastingly, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” made $106M during its opening three-day weekend, surpassing the earnings of “Captain America: Brave New World”.

The film “Captain America: Brave New World” initially faced a rocky beginning, as its leading actor, Anthony Mackie (playing Sam Wilson as the new Captain America), made unconventional comments implying that the traditionally patriotic character might not be the best representation of America. However, he later clarified his remarks. Did these statements positively or negatively impact ticket sales?

In the TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, having it lead into other shows didn’t significantly boost its critical acclaim. Critics preferred Ms. Marvel, Marvel’s Agents of Shield (ABC), Hawkeye, and even Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. from Hulu. Additionally, comic book readers were not particularly fond of Sam Wilson assuming the Captain America mantle in Marvel Comics; they preferred him as The Falcon rather than being transitioned into a secondary character.

In terms of the film’s reception, it was generally panned by both fans and critics. Critics such as Barry Hertz from The Globe and Mail found it to be a politically inconsistent, creatively uninspired sequel that was downright offensive. The Washington Post’s Ty Burr went a step further, accusing the movie of prioritizing fan service and safeguarding intellectual property over telling a compelling story. Meanwhile, The New York Times critic expressed disappointment with its low-budget action scenes and flashy visuals, likening it to nothing more than an action figure commercial.

Oof.

Even the typical post-credits sequence didn’t go unscathed by critique. It was generally deemed dull and foreseeable, offering no fresh insights into upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films that fans hadn’t anticipated beforehand. I wonder what Disney was thinking there?

The film was released just last Thursday, so while it’s improbable, there’s still a chance that its critic rating could change slightly before settling. However, it’s doubtful that its performance will significantly improve. If the box office numbers for next weekend don’t plummet, the movie might avoid being a total flop. Yet, given its current company at the bottom of the Tomatometer, things aren’t looking particularly promising.
