Captain America 4, Thunderbolts*, & The Marvels’ Box Office Failure Explained by Kevin Feige

Kevin Feige, from Marvel Studios, has shared insights on why films such as The Marvels, Captain America 4, and Thunderbolts didn’t generate significant box office buzz.

I stepped into the theater in November 2023 for the highly anticipated release of The Marvels, but it only managed to rake in about $206.1 million at the worldwide box office. Fast forward to February 2025, and Captain America: Brave New World (Cap 4) blew me away, earning a whopping $415.1 million at the box office. And just when I thought that was impressive, Thunderbolts hit the screens in May 2025 and brought home an astounding $382.1 million!

What did Kevin Feige say about Thunderbolts*, Captain America 4, and The Marvels?

According to Feige’s conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, he feels that some fans may have been under the impression that they needed to watch Marvel’s Disney+ TV series as prerequisites for enjoying the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, due to Marvel’s emphasis on their television shows.

As a devoted fan, I’ve found myself expressing sentiments like, “It’s the growth that’s left me pondering, ‘Do I truly need to be acquainted with every character? It was once delightful, but now does it feel obligatory to know everything?’ The Marvels series seems to have struck a chord for many, as people might say, ‘I recognize her from a blockbuster film. But who are the other two? I suppose they were in a TV show. I’ll pass this time.’

Feige expressed to Deadline a rationale similar to why Thunderbolts* didn’t garner more attention, stating, “Thunderbolts*, despite being a great movie, didn’t resonate widely because not many people recognized the title and several of the characters were from TV shows. This led some viewers to think, ‘I must have missed those other shows in order to understand who these characters are?’

Regarding Captain America 4, Feige mentioned that fans may not have warmed up to it because it was the first one without Chris Evans.

In Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, we can expect to see the remaining members of the original Thunderbolts team, who have rebranded themselves as the New Avengers, along with Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Captain America/Sam Wilson. However, it is still uncertain whether Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, or Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel will make an appearance in the film.
