In their own words, Director Julius Onah believes that the trailers for Captain America 4 unavoidably gave away the surprise of the Red Hulk’s appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
In U.S. cinemas this past February, Marvel Studios released Captain America 4 under the title “Captain America: Brave New World.” This film features Anthony Mackie returning as Sam Wilson/Captain America and Harrison Ford portraying Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross/Red Hulk.
As a die-hard fan, I was thrilled when I first caught wind of Captain America: Brave New World’s trailers hinting at Ford morphing into Red Hulk at some point in the film. Yet, what took me aback was discovering that this transformation isn’t shown until the movie’s climax, serving as a significant twist or revelation that left many of us fans in a state of shock and excitement!
What did Julius Onah say about Captain America 4 and Red Hulk?
In a conversation with Empire Magazine, Onah expressed that it wasn’t feasible to conceal Red Hulk in the trailers as a surprise element.
In simpler terms, Onah stated, “When you cast Harrison Ford as Thaddeus Ross for a movie like this, given the enormous and enthusiastic fanbase of the MCU, it’s essentially game over. If we could have kept it as an unexpected in-theater reveal, it would have been fantastic, but I think it would have been challenging. In today’s world, it’s tough to keep secrets because eventually, a toy might be discovered or someone might leak a trailer.
Besides Mackie and Ford, the film’s cast also features Danny Ramirez portraying Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Shira Haas in the role of Ruth Bat-Seraph, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Xosha Roquemore as Leila Taylor, Giancarlo Esposito as Seth Voelker/Sidewinder, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, and Tim Blake Nelson depicting Samuel Sterns.
