Capcom Shuts Down Resident Evil Re:Verse

The popular online third-person shooter game, where players could fight as famous characters from the series, is set to stop operating on June 30, 2025. Furthermore, this game will no longer be available for purchase or download from digital stores starting March 3, 2025.

A Short-Lived Experiment Ends

This announcement doesn’t come as a shock to many, considering Re:Verse’s turbulent past. Initially unveiled during Resident Evil’s 25th anniversary celebration, the game endured several postponements before eventually launching in October 2022. Despite the strong brand identity and excitement surrounding the franchise, Re:Verse struggled to make an impact, dealing with low player numbers and muted responses from the start. Now, less than three years after its release, Capcom is terminating it, further solidifying its status as one of the company’s less successful and forgettable ventures.

Resident Evil Re:Verse was made to go hand-in-hand with Resident Evil Village, offering players a multiplayer experience where they can fight each other in battle royale-like scenarios using well-known characters like Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, and Jill Valentine. Unfortunately, from its launch, the game faced numerous technical problems, had minimal content, and lacked captivating gameplay.

Capcom’s official statement paints a bittersweet picture of the game’s lifecycle:

“Resident Evil Re:Verse was developed in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Resident Evil series, and your overwhelming support for the game has far exceeded our expectations since the time of its release.”

Despite initial expectations, the game’s actual performance paints a different picture. It failed to break into mainstream popularity, as SteamDB data reveals that Re:Verse peaked with only 2,115 simultaneous players. By late 2022, its player count had dropped to just double digits, and in recent months, it’s been hard-pressed to exceed 20 active players.

It’s with regret that we announce the discontinuation of all services and support for Resident Evil Re:Verse as of June 29, 2025. A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated players over the past few years! For further information regarding this closure, including a timeline, please check out the details provided.

The Shutdown Timeline

Capcom has outlined the following schedule leading up to the shutdown:

  • February 5, 2025 – Official shutdown announcement.
  • March 3, 2025 – The game and all downloadable content, including skins, RP Boosters, and the Premium Pass, will be removed from online stores. Resident Evil Re:Verse will also no longer be included with purchases of Resident Evil Village.
  • June 29, 2025 – Servers shut down, making the game completely unplayable.

Those who currently possess Re:Verse can continue to download and enjoy it up until the closure date. However, once the shutdown occurs, any advancements, in-game acquisitions, and premium content will no longer be accessible.

Another Failed Multiplayer Spin-Off

The closure of Resident Evil Re:Verse represents another unsuccessful endeavor by Capcom to incorporate a multiplayer aspect into the Resident Evil series. Previous attempts, including Umbrella Corps and Resident Evil Resistance, similarly failed to engage players and ultimately fizzled out. Despite the ongoing success of Resident Evil as a single-player survival horror game, Capcom has yet to develop a multiplayer approach that appeals to its audience.

Now that Re:Verse has been added to the list of discontinued spin-offs, it sparks curiosity: Is multiplayer really essential for Resident Evil, or should Capcom concentrate exclusively on their strength – providing top-notch single-player horror adventures? What’s your take on this?
