Cancel Culture – Real Or Myth?

The concept of Cancel Culture has been a recurring topic in societal discussions for quite some time now. Some conservative critics label it a witch hunt, while advocates view it as an expectation of accountability. The issue arises: what genuine impact does this culture truly have? Does it effectively hold wrongdoers accountable, or has it devolved into a hollow phrase without tangible meaning? A striking observation is that men under investigation for sexual assault, domestic abuse, or misuse of power frequently escape any real consequences, as if such incidents never took place.

What Is Cancel Culture?

Essentially, Cancel Culture represents a movement encouraging people to shun individuals or entities deemed to have acted inappropriately. This practice, initially employed as a form of digital protest by disadvantaged groups, gained significant momentum through social media networks like Twitter. The MeToo movement further popularized this concept on a global scale. Its essence lies in the replacement of legal consequences with public scrutiny. However, critics contend that it mirrors a contemporary form of mob mentality or a witch hunt. Particularly conservative voices often use this term to undermine feminist or anti-racist movements.

A Successful Career Despite Serious Allegations?

Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding Cancel Culture, it’s striking how some prominent figures in entertainment, sports, and popular culture have faced accusations of severe misconduct or violence, but their careers remain unblemished and admired. Here are a few instances to illustrate this point.

For a number of years, Amber Heard accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence, but eventually, the hostility online shifted towards her. Despite the fact that the court case centered around defamation rather than the abuse itself, Depp is currently being hailed as a hero. Previously, he had openly acknowledged his struggles with violent tendencies and substance abuse.

Despite Amber Heard presenting photographs, videos, text messages, audio recordings, eyewitness accounts, medical reports, and therapist’s notes, her claims were not fully accepted. This situation represents a significant hurdle for women everywhere, sparking the hashtag #IStandWithAmberHeard.

As a gaming enthusiast, I find it intriguing how artists like Chris Brown keep making headlines and selling out shows despite his past controversies. Back in the day, he was convicted for brutally assaulting Rihanna, followed by numerous accusations, including rape allegations. Yet, here we are, still talking about him and his success in the industry.

Mike Tyson was found guilty of rape, spent three years behind bars, but nonetheless attained legendary status within popular culture.

Angelina Jolie made accusations against Brad Pitt, which included charges of domestic violence. As stated in court records and an FBI report, Pitt is said to have physically harmed her and their children during a flight. His eldest children have expressed their distance from him and seem to be strongly backing their mother’s stance.

In 2009, accusations of rape were made against Cristiano Ronaldo by Kathryn Mayorga. Subsequently, in 2010, a settlement of $375,000 was reached outside the courtroom with her, and no criminal charges were filed against him. However, leaked documents suggest that he himself admitted she had said “no” several times during their encounter. Remarkably, these severe allegations did not impact his thriving career in any way.

If you’re seeking a reference, the 2009 deposition transcript of Ronaldo was initially published in the German newspaper Der Spiegel back in 2018. An article that provides a comprehensive overview of the most incriminating statements where he acknowledges the allegations of rape can be found there.

For numerous decades, accusations of sexual misconduct against Donald Trump have surfaced, with at least 27 women making such claims. In one instance, he was held responsible for these actions in a civil court case. However, despite this, he managed to secure two elections as the leader of the world’s most powerful nation.

The Real Cost Of Calling Out Abuse

In a twist of irony, the uproar against Cancel Culture seems to fall short when individuals labeled as ‘canceled’ go on to achieve significant milestones such as winning Oscars, embarking on successful world tours, or even becoming president. This contradicts the frequent assertion that women bring forward accusations merely for attention, wealth, or fame.

However, let’s reconsider this perspective when we look at cases like Amber Heard. She is not a winner; she is a target of scorn, hatred, and death threats. Her awards and career opportunities did not come from the hands of others; instead, she was ridiculed for speaking out against physical and sexual violence. People mocked her appearance, her tone, and her tears as she recounted the alleged rape by Johnny Depp.

To this very day, she endures hate. To this very day, she grapples with financial ruin. So, one must question, how could that have ever been an advantage for her? While he continues his career unscathed? This doesn’t imply she is without flaws – but it does underscore a harsh reality: in a case where no party emerged victorious, only one walked away with their career intact.

Amber Heard served as a revealing example, unfortunately exposing many individuals who failed to recognize the truth in that scenario. We’re now experiencing the repercussions of this incident. This statement can be rephrased as: “She was a test case, and too many people failed it. We’re dealing with the consequences of that trial.” In a less biased context, one might say: “Her case has become a significant example, and unfortunately, it’s shown that many people struggle to discern truth from falsehood in this situation. Now we see the aftermath of those findings.

Is Anyone Actually Getting Canceled?

It’s not uncommon for celebrities to fade from public view following severe accusations; however, more times than not, their absence is only temporary. For instance, James Franco, who was accused of sexual misconduct by several women, including students from his acting school, went silent for a while but made a surprising reappearance at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025. Similarly, Armie Hammer faced allegations of rape and disturbing messages about violent fantasies and misuse of power. Despite these claims, he too has been seen making public appearances once more.

The internet quickly transformed everything into a meme, and cannibal humor soon overshadowed the grave allegations. Nowadays, Shia LaBeouf can still be found making podcast appearances, openly expressing his frustration with women’s exhausting nature. This is Shia LaBeouf, who was once accused by FKA Twigs of severe abuse, such as manipulation, isolation, and physical violence. Despite these accusations, he remains a fixture in Hollywood, with invitations to industry events, support from fellow actors, and even friendly correspondence with Timothée Chalamet. In the world of Hollywood, he never truly disappeared.

The Problem With Memes And Misinformation

In a more casual and understandable way: The internet often turns grave situations into jokes. For instance, P. Diddy is facing severe charges like human trafficking, rape, and RICO, yet he’s become a TikTok meme. Similarly, Armie Hammer is now known as the “funny cannibal guy.” It seems that humor lessens the impact, even when people genuinely believe someone is guilty. Essentially, everything turns into content or a meme. Once something loses its seriousness, abusers can easily make a comeback without facing accountability, just by rebranding themselves.

Jokes that Diddy tells often border on rape humor, and I want to emphasize that there is absolutely nothing amusing or appealing about the subject of rape. It seems unusual and inappropriate to find enjoyment in such content as entertainment.

A significant concern lies in the proliferation of false information and the casual approach many people take when seeking the truth. For instance, in the U.S., court documents like those related to the case between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp can be publicly accessed. However, most individuals prefer to consume quick, 15-second TikTok videos where unqualified users express their opinions rather than conducting thorough research.

This tendency to believe assertions made with confidence, regardless of their accuracy, fuels the creation of misinformation, distorted facts, and conspiracy theories.

This issue stirs strong feelings in a lot of individuals, so we’re curious to hear your perspective. What are your thoughts on this matter?
