As a long-time Call of Duty fan who has been grappling with the ever-increasing file sizes of these games, I am thrilled to hear Activision’s plans to address this issue before the release of Black Ops 6. My hard drive can finally breathe a sigh of relief! The fact that they aim to make the game smaller than Modern Warfare 3 is music to my ears (and storage-strapped console’s heart).
Over the last few years, a common concern among Call of Duty players has been the increasing file sizes for new game downloads. This problem has escalated since the beginning of the PS5/XSX console generation. However, publisher Activision acknowledges this issue and intends to address it before the expected launch of Black Ops 6 in October.
In a recent blog post, Activision discussed their approach to reducing large game file sizes, particularly for their first-person shooter series. This issue is being tackled through a sequence of updates to the Call of Duty app, with the initial update set for August 21 before the Black Ops 6 Beta. As part of these improvements, the Black Ops 6 game size will be less than Modern Warfare 3, which was over 200 GB.
Activision has shared that they plan to separate Warzone, the free-to-play battle royale mode of Call of Duty, from future main series games. Previously, users who bought new Call of Duty games needed to download Warzone too, which increased file sizes for those not interested in Warzone. From now on, players will be able to choose whether or not to download Warzone.
The publishing company provides insights into the technical processes being carried out backstage to minimize file sizes for Call of Duty games. Amidst the buzz surrounding Black Ops 6, keep tuned to Shacknews for the most recent news about Treyarch’s forthcoming installment.
