Call of Duty Squid Game crossover shows Activision has truly “lost its mind”

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that I find Activision’s latest moves to be quite baffling. Having witnessed the evolution of Call of Duty from its humble beginnings to the behemoth it is today, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the direction they seem to be heading in.

The Squid Game collaboration, while an interesting concept, has been marred by the addition of yet another layer of microtransactions. It feels like Activision is more interested in squeezing every last penny out of its players rather than addressing the game-breaking issues that have plagued the game for quite some time now.

I remember a time when collaborations were free and accessible to all, not just those with deep pockets. Now, it seems I’m paying more and more for less and less. With each new season, the cost of playing Black Ops 6 is reaching astronomical heights. I’ve lost count of how much I’ve spent on this game, but I do know that I could have bought a decent gaming PC by now!

If Activision doesn’t change its ways soon, I fear they might just find themselves in a ‘Red Light, Green Light’ scenario – stuck in the same spot while the rest of the gaming world moves on.

On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder if the next collaboration will be with a company that sells money trees. That way, I could finally afford all those cosmetics without having to sell my soul!

In a new development, the universe of Call of Duty is partnering with popular TV shows and films, most recently with Netflix’s hit series Squid Game. Previously, they have incorporated characters and settings from shows like The Boys, Fallout, and even Nicki Minaj into their multiplayer, cooperative, and battle royale modes.

The popular Netflix series Squid Game is now integrated with Call of Duty’s Black Ops 6 game (crossover), but some players are upset because Activision, the publisher of Call of Duty, has added more opportunities for in-game purchases (microtransactions). This has led to criticism as it appears that Activision is focusing on making money rather than fixing problems with the game.

Has Activision lost its mind?

Following the disclosure about the Squid Game partnership’s details, which encompassed multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone modes, players were keen observers who couldn’t help but feel frustrated that Activision failed to reveal the cost of the new event pass in their announcement.

Given that hackers continue to plague many playlists, Activision’s introduction of a premium event tier for an extra $10 suggests their primary focus is on amassing substantial profits, rather than addressing the underlying issue causing a significant drop in players. As a result, some enthusiasts are now spending over $100 to gain access to Black Ops 6, its seasonal battle passes, and any new items offered for sale in the store.

In our previous collaborations, everyone had an opportunity to obtain exclusive, limited-time items without charge, attending free events. However, should you wish to secure the most sought-after goods now, there will be an additional expense involved.

Will Activision change its mind?

Contrary to the criticism from gamers, the paid event pass in Fortnite goes against the norm set by other well-known online games. It was Fortnite that pioneered a premium tier for collaborations, and it’s not surprising that Activision is leveraging this model to boost its earnings even more.

As a gamer who has been around for quite some time, I can say that the constant need to pay for cosmetics in games can be quite frustrating at times. In my experience, I’ve found myself skipping events because I couldn’t afford the passes or the exclusive items they offered. If Activision continues to follow this trend with future events, it could potentially lead to a decline in player engagement and overall satisfaction. Personally, I would much rather see the company offer more accessible ways for players to earn unique cosmetics through gameplay or other free methods, instead of relying solely on paid passes. After all, the joy of gaming comes from the experience itself, not just the appearance of our characters.
