As a long-time gamer with memories of LAN parties and late-night gaming sessions stretching back to my youth, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic melancholy at the news of XDefiant‘s sunset. The game had shown promise, harkening back to a simpler era of FPS games that seemed to be missing from recent releases.
It was an exhilarating moment for players who were feeling a bit weary of the Call of Duty series trying to find new ways, as Ubisoft’s XDefiant, a free-to-play arena shooter, finally made its debut in May 2024. Previously delayed from its original launch date, this game provided fans with mechanics reminiscent of classic first-person shooters that have been absent from recent releases.
Even though the game showed promising signs after its release, the number of players rapidly declined because network problems marred most games.
XDefiant sunsets after two disappointing seasons
On December 3, 2024, I found myself heartbroken to announce that the sun is setting on XDefiant. The initial response to this game was absolutely incredible! It quickly became the fastest Ubisoft game to amass over five million users and boasts an impressive 15 million fans eagerly jumping into the action.

Rubin mentions that the free-to-play aspect of XDefiant was one of several reasons contributing to its decline. In other words, being a free-to-play game often means a lengthy process before finding success and profitability. Ubisoft and their team were willing to embark on this long journey, but unfortunately, the path became too challenging to continue sensibly in recent times.
Beyond the disappointing news about the shutdown of XDefiant, there’s more to it. Alongside this game’s termination, Ubisoft has also decided to close its studios in San Francisco and Osaka, leading to a total of 277 job losses. This figure represents roughly half of the workforce that was involved in the development of XDefiant.
For anyone who’s yet to enjoy XDefiant and doesn’t want their game time interrupted, the creators have announced that they will roll out the Season 3 update at a future date. They assure us that the servers will remain active until June 3, 2025.
Another Ubisoft failure
2024 hasn’t been a breeze for Ubisoft. Their major releases have underperformed, there have been setbacks with delays and even cancellations of unlaunched games. Throughout the year, they’ve faced challenges. Lately, they’ve cancelled The Division: Heartland and postponed Assassin’s Creed Shadows until 2025 following the less-than-satisfactory debut of Star Wars Outlaws.
XDefiant sought to challenge the mold established by Call of Duty by abandoning skill-based matchmaking completely, an aspect frequently debated among gamers as a criticism within Activision’s franchise. Although it retained the game’s traditional feel and popular elements, frequent inaccuracies in hit registration ultimately proved to be the final issue that frustrated players.
