Previous installments of Call of Duty have sometimes faced criticism over the substantial downloads required.
Big download will lead to smoother experience at launch
In a new change, Treyarch is revamping the Call of Duty launcher and separating Warzone from being a compulsory download alongside Black Ops 6. This update means that when gamers choose to download Black Ops 6, it will only consist of the game’s main files. If players wish to play Warzone or other titles, they’ll have the option to opt-in for their respective downloads, providing more flexibility in terms of what users decide to install on their devices.
As a gamer eagerly anticipating the upcoming Season 5 Reloaded for Call of Duty, I’m excited but also curious about the exact download size. Treyarch is still fine-tuning things in preparation for our big day on August 21, 2024. That’s when we’ll dive into the game with new technology and a revamped data structure, paving the way for the beta and eventual launch.
As reported by Activision, this upcoming update is expected to be quite substantial in size. For PlayStation 5 users, the download process will be divided into four parts, each part being initiated within the Call of Duty environment. While the initial download may seem large, Activision assures that it will lead to a more seamless experience at Black Ops 6’s debut and smaller file sizes in the future.
Textured streaming expanded to help download sizes
Activision explained their strategy for broadening the application of texture streaming – a method designed to lower file and download volumes. With this expansion, they can rotate out infrequently-used content, thereby reducing the amount of data that gets saved directly onto devices.
To express gratitude towards the community for their part in preparing and deploying these downloads, Activision is generously offering players some exciting in-game rewards. Players logging in from the commencement of Season 5 Reloaded to its conclusion will be gifted with ten 1-hour double experience tokens for both characters and weapons, along with ten Battle Pass token tier skips as well.
