Yearly event known as Groundhog Day – where a sleepy groundhog is pulled from its den to forecast the weather – could use an update, suggests PETA. Their suggestion for change? Retire Punxsutawney Phil and instead introduce… a cake.
A Sweeter Groundhog Day?
Due to the movie Groundhog Day featuring Bill Murray, this peculiar tradition has gained widespread recognition, extending beyond Pennsylvania’s borders. Each year on February 2nd, Phil is dramatically brought out (not just emerging) to forecast whether winter will persist or if spring is approaching. A shadow indicates six more weeks of cold weather, while its absence signals warmer days ahead.
It’s suggested that it’s high time for Phil to have a peaceful retirement, away from the public eye and weather forecast duties, which were not part of his original agreement.
Trade A Groundhog To A Cake
PETA sent a letter to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club with a proposal: replace Phil with a cake.
Groundhogs are not famous for delivering speeches in public. Instead, they spend their days digging tunnels, communicating with other marmots, and occasionally climbing trees. However, they do not willingly participate in weather-related performances for an audience, as PETA President Ingrid Newkirk states: “Phil has been deprived of all of that for the sake of an outdated tradition.
In essence, PETA’s proposed idea: A freshly baked cake, presumably obtained ethically, serves as their solution. Furthermore, they guarantee to deliver a new vegan cake annually, accompanied by a reliable weather forecast system. With blue icing symbolizing winter, and pink representing spring, it essentially transforms into a Groundhog Day-inspired gender reveal party, excluding the hazards like explosions or forest fires.
It’s unlikely that the tradition will transition into an annual dessert ceremony. To put it frankly, watching a cake being cut may not be any more thrilling than observing a puzzled groundhog being lifted up, much like a budget lion cub. On a personal note, I do enjoy cake and I would graciously allow Phil to retire in peace.
