BUZZ: Dulquer Salmaan likely to portray Tamil cinema’s first superstar MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar in Kaantha

As a dedicated fan of Dulquer Salmaan, I am absolutely thrilled about his upcoming role as MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar in Kaantha! The prospect of delving into the life of the first superstar of Tamil cinema, with all its highs and lows, is nothing short of exhilarating.

Currently enjoying the triumph of his movie “Lucky Bhaskar,” directed by Venky Atluri, actor Dulquer Salmaan is now gearing up for his role in the upcoming Tamil period film “Kaantha.” It’s being said that this movie will see him playing MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, the pioneer of Tamil cinema’s first superstar.

According to recent online chatter, it appears that Dulquer Salmaan might take up the lead role in an upcoming biopic focusing on a renowned figure’s life. This individual is rumored to have been implicated in the Lakshmikanthan case, but it’s important to note that this has not been officially verified by the filmmakers yet.

For those not familiar, MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, often referred to as MKT, was a well-known actor and Carnatic singer who worked in Tamil cinema from 1934 to 1960. Many film experts and historians believe he was the first superstar of Tamil cinema. Throughout his career, he starred in 14 films, with 10 of them being massive box-office successes.

Yet, it’s worth noting that the renowned figure was once entangled in a contentious incident involving Tamil journalist Lakshmikanthan. In 1944, this journalist was tragically murdered by unidentified individuals, which made it one of the most notable cases during that era.

An examination, performed during the time of Madras Presidency, implicated performers MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, NS Krishnan, and filmmaker SM Sriramulu Naidu in a particular incident, resulting in their detention by law enforcement officers.

Initially, Naidu was cleared of charges, but MKT and Krishnan were convicted and sentenced to prison. In 1947, they appealed their case to the Privy Council, which ordered a new trial. This subsequent trial ultimately established their innocence, leading to their acquittal. However, the true perpetrators of the crime were never identified.

Nevertheless, it’s reported that MKT’s arrest greatly affected his spirit, leading him to withdraw from movies and find comfort in temples instead. Despite persisting with concert performances, the actor ultimately passed away at 49 years old, impoverished after battling the case and left in dire straits due to a lack of funds.

In the future, it’s worth mentioning that Dulquer Salmaan isn’t the only notable actor in this upcoming film. We also have Rana Daggubati and Bhagyasri Borse playing significant roles. Additionally, there are whispers about an upcoming Telugu language movie titled Aakasam Lo Oka Tara, where our lead actor is said to star. There’s speculation that Sai Pallavi might be the female lead in this film as well.
