As a gamer with a deep-rooted passion for immersive, story-driven experiences, I find myself deeply troubled by this potential ban of Stalker 2 in Russia. I have always appreciated games that push boundaries and offer unique perspectives on the world we live in, and Stalker 2 seems to be one such game.
In simple terms, there’s a potential ban of the game Stalker 2 in the Russian region, given that it is close to its November 20th launch. Russian authorities are examining the game carefully to determine if it contains any content promoting “extremism” or negative sentiments towards Russia.
Stalker 2 faces Russian ban
According to RIA Novosti, a Russian state news agency, Deputy Anton Gorelki of the State Duma has hinted at potential bans for certain games based on their content. If the game’s content is deemed “anti-Russian”, it could be quickly prohibited within Russia.
Additionally, individuals discovered to have played or bought the game using a VPN or similar methods may face penalties imposed by the Russian government, should the game eventually be prohibited.
Through VGC, players discovered that playing the prohibited game might lead to a ban, which is equivalent to endorsing a “hostile faction.” The Russian government further states that such support for an anti-Russian video game could potentially be considered an act of terrorism. This action could result in penalties such as fines, imprisonment, or other forms of punishment.
Currently, Russian authorities are examining the game due to its potential promotion of terrorism, extremist language, and anti-Russian statements.
The game was created by Ukrainian game developer GSC Game World, with some of its developers choosing to remain in the war-stricken region as Russia persistently destroys their country. Others relocated to different studios based in the Czech Republic. A “Making Of” documentary by Microsoft shed light on the challenging circumstances that the studio encountered during the game’s development.
On November 20, 2024, Stalker 2 will debut on Xbox Series consoles and personal computers. Additionally, it’s set to be available on Xbox Game Pass from its launch day. At this point, a release date for PS5 has not been announced for the game.
