There’s been quite a lot of debate about the unveiling of Bungie’s upcoming game, Marathon. Some people believe this new shooter is essentially a substitute for Destiny, but Bungie insists that it caters to a different type of gamer than most players of Destiny 2, who are unfortunately dwindling in numbers.
During a chat with GamesRadar, game director Joe Ziegler clarified that Marathon isn’t meant as a substitute for Destiny. Rather, this new extract-based shooter is crafted to coexist with it, allowing Bungie to keep developing and securing a future for the game.
Marathon won’t kill Destiny 2
Ziegler clarified that while Marathon won’t aim to replace Destiny as its main successor, given Destiny’s strong emphasis on Player versus Environment (PvE) gameplay, it will instead offer a fresh choice for fans who appreciate the studio’s work, specifically focusing on a pure Player versus Player (PvP) experience.
They mentioned that Marathon isn’t intended to be Destiny 3. Instead, their focus is on enhancing the existing Destiny 2 experience. They believe that Destiny 2 still has potential and the team behind it is putting in a lot of effort to cater to the players’ preferences. If you enjoy Destiny and also appreciate multiplayer combat games, they suggest that Marathon could offer an enticing experience for you.
“If you are only looking for PvE experiences, definitely Marathon is not the game for you.”

In Ziegler’s explanation, they pointed out that both games share some resemblance in their weapon systems, but also suggested that Marathon may not appeal to every Destiny 2 player. This is because competitive multiplayer (PvP) isn’t a favorite aspect of Destiny 2 for many reasons, and Bungie’s new game seems to prioritize PvP heavily.
If you’re searching for games that focus on Player vs Environment (PvE) experiences, Marathon likely wouldn’t suit your needs. As Ziegler explains, “This game isn’t for everyone. It caters specifically to players who appreciate Player versus Player (PvP) encounters, particularly within sandbox environments, as they are more likely to find enjoyment in it.
Clearly, Marathon isn’t like Destiny – it lacks the focus on character progression over a long period and an expansive, multi-year narrative. With Destiny 2’s future seeming uncertain, perhaps it’s high time to offer fans some genuine optimism for Destiny 3 or at least its true successor.
