Bungie talks Destiny 2's future: twice-a-year expansions, free seasons, core activity changes & more

As a seasoned Destiny 2 veteran with countless hours spent grinding through raids and strikes, the recent revelations from Bungie about Codename: Frontiers have me buzzing with anticipation! The shift to a twice-a-year expansion model is a bold move, but I’m all for it if it means more frequent content drops.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled about Bungie’s exciting revelations under the codename “Frontiers,” signifying significant advancements in Destiny 2 over the coming years. In a series of in-depth explorations, Bungie has offered us a sneak peek into the transformation of our beloved game, with particular focus on Codename: Apollo, slated for summer 2025. Moreover, they’ve dropped hints about the upcoming expansion, Behemoth, and shared their strategies for season management, content creation, and more.

To mark Destiny’s 10th anniversary on September 9, 2024, Bungie unveiled various articles discussing changes in Destiny 2 over the upcoming years. Initially, Bungie will move towards a twice-yearly expansion strategy, with each expansion being more compact than the large annual expansions players are accustomed to.

The onset of the upcoming expansion will herald a fresh chapter, expected to persist till the arrival of the following expansion. Over the course of this half-year duration, Bungie plans to roll out two significant updates offering complimentary content for every player.

  • New and reprised activities
  • New gear and artifact mods
  • New modifiers and challenges
  • New sandbox meta
  • New events

Operation Apollo, scheduled for summer 2025, offers players an open-ended adventure where they can tackle missions in their preferred sequence. Code named Apollo, this expansion transports players to a fresh setting, and while the narrative flow is non-sequential, Bungie assures us that the story remains coherent. Interestingly, not every expansion will follow this non-linear format; each one will have a well-crafted narrative that suits its specific structure.

Bungie shared some details about their plans to revamp the way players access activities within Destiny 2. Currently, discovering new activities can be tough for both seasoned players and beginners. To make things easier, they are working on a new feature called Portals, which will act as a central hub where most of the activities can be found.

The Homepage will categorize activities under headings like Solo Missions, Team Missions, and Crisis Missions. These sections will contain missions that fit their respective themes: Solo Missions will consist of smaller tasks suitable for one to three players, Team Missions are designed for pre-formed teams capable of effective communication, while Crisis Missions feature six-player activities. Additionally, there are a few other categories designated for some of the endgame content.

The activities offer daily changing bonus incentives as well. Bungie mentions that Gambit will continue to be found under its Destination tab, and they’re brainstorming potential updates for this game mode.

The reason players do anything in Destiny 2 is for the rewards and Bungie is taking another run at improving this aspect of the game. Moving forward, Legendary weapons and armor will have a tiered system that improves the gear with things like stat bonuses, enhanced perks, and other benefits. These rewards will also be dispersed into “pools,” with certain weapon drops only available from things like Core PVE and PVP modes or Pinnacle PVE and PVP modes. New gear each season will also be labeled as such, making it easier for players to see what is actually new without needing to learn seasonal icons.

Eventually, Bungie shared details about the gameplay aspects themselves. In Destiny 2, there will be a novel difficulty adjustment feature that enables players to personally tweak the level of difficulty. By modifying the difficulty, players can influence the nature of the rewards they receive.
