Bungie lays off 220 employees amid economic restructuring

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experiences under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness and concern upon hearing about Bungie’s latest round of layoffs. I’ve been following Destiny since its inception, and it has become one of the pillars of my gaming life. The thought that such a significant part of the team behind this beloved game is being let go is disheartening.

Unfortunately, Bungie’s staff faces challenging times as the studio has disclosed that they will be letting go of 220 employees, which equates to about 17% of their workforce. This decision follows a large-scale layoff at the Destiny 2 developer last autumn.

As a seasoned professional with years of experience in the gaming industry, I find it disheartening to hear about the mass layoffs at Bungie announced by CEO Pete Parsons today. Having worked in similar circumstances myself, I understand the emotional toll such news can take on employees and their families.

He further revealed that Bungie will assimilate 155 employees, which is around 12% of the company’s workforce, into positions at Sony Interactive Entertainment. A fresh studio, made up of current Bungie team members, is being established within PlayStation Studios to carry on with a project called “an action game set in a novel science-fantasy universe,” which is currently in an experimental phase.

Last October, Bungie underwent a series of job reductions, significantly impacting their social and community departments. This event follows a period of layoffs in the gaming sector that has extended over the last few years, prompting unionization initiatives at multiple companies within the industry.
