Bucky and Cap round out Marvel Rivals' expansive roster in impressive fashion

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent in both Overwatch and Marvel Rivals, I must say that the two games are like estranged siblings who share a striking resemblance yet possess their unique quirks. Though they may have some similarities, Marvel Rivals is carving its niche with innovative mechanics and fresh character designs.

Discussing Marvel Rivals can be tricky since conversations often steer towards comparing it to Overwatch. Despite their distinct features – like the focus on destructible environments, team synergy bonuses, and third-person play for every character in Rivals – they share a similar art style, game modes, and character abilities, which encourages constant comparisons between them.

From my experience playing numerous versions of Rivals and Overwatch, accumulating many hundreds (if not thousands) of hours, the latest heroes unveiled have been surprisingly distinct from the similar classes we’ve encountered before. Star-Lord’s backline infiltration and twin pistols bear a striking resemblance to Tracer, Doctor Strange’s shield play is very much like Reinhardt’s, and The Punisher’s equipment closely matches different aspects of Soldier 76 and Bastion.

It’s great that the game creators have been introducing fresh and quirky Marvel characters, who are adding an enjoyable twist to hero shooter mechanics. Among them, Jeff The Land Shark, a beloved side character from comics, offers a unique spin as an infiltration unit (and he’s adorably cute). Fortunately, the latest additions to the chaos, Captain America and The Winter Soldier, each bring their own distinct flavor to the multiversal mayhem.

As a dedicated player, I must say that among the melee brawlers we’ve encountered at Gamescom, Steve Rodgers stands out as the most versatile. His shield bash allows for a quick approach, and when combined with a sprint to cover long distances, it gives him an edge in maintaining pressure against enemies attempting to retreat. The thrill of *THAWANG*ing his shield off enemy heads is simply unmatched! Furthermore, his shield not only adds an extra layer of defense but also makes him more effective compared to current melee heroes like Spider-Man and Black Panther.

Bucky Barnes, although not as refined, offers an intriguing character type in the game due to his potent pistol that requires reloading after every two shots and a skill that disables enemy abilities. While we’re yet to fully grasp what happened to his mechanical arm, it appears to possess grappling capabilities similar to those seen in Bionicle Commando (2009), and its design seems somewhat… biologically integrated.

Over the past few months, Marvel Rivals has been steadily gaining trust from the gaming community that NetEase Games can create a fair hero shooter. Yet, it’s uncertain if the post-release updates and support will live up to expectations or how monetization strategies may influence the overall gameplay experience.

Marvel Rivals is set to hit the shelves soon – it’s scheduled for launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on December 6th of this year, so not much longer now!
