As a lifestyle expert with over two decades of experience in the film industry, I have seen my fair share of Tamil cinema, from the golden age to the digital revolution. The latest release, Brother starring Jayam Ravi, is a nostalgic trip down memory lane – but not in a good way.
This year for Diwali, the movie titled “Brother” featuring Jayam Ravi is making its way to cinemas on October 31, 2024. The plot revolves around Karthik, a former law student who bravely confronts injustice and challenges those in positions of authority.
Disappointed with his actions, his older sister chooses to bring him to live with her in-laws, hoping this change of environment will help reform him. The rest of the film revolves around whether Karthik is capable of changing his behavior to meet the standards set by those around him.
Apart from Jayam Ravi, the lineup also features Priyanka Mohan, Bhumika Chawla, Saranya Ponvannan, Seetha, Natarajan Subramaniam, Achyuth Kumar, Rao Ramesh, and more notable actors in key parts.
The Plot:
The movie titled “Brother,” featuring Jayam Ravi in the main role, centers around a character named Karthik. This individual, since youth, has an inherent curiosity about everything that transpires in his surroundings and champions justice. Given his character’s traits, he initially pursues law studies but eventually leaves due to his unyielding nature.
Karthik lives a relaxed life in Chennai alongside his parents, frequently pondering over unfairness. Unfortunately, one of his playful acts triggers a heart attack in his father. As a result, his eldest sister chooses to move him to her in-laws’ home, aiming to instill discipline in him.
Despite this action, Karthik continues to create issues at his sister’s residence, triggering a chain of chaotic events that serve as a prelude to the rest of the film. If you’re thinking about catching the Jayam Ravi-starrer in cinemas, here’s a review from TopMob to assist you in determining whether it’s worth watching on the silver screen.
The Good:
As a lifestyle expert, I’d say: In my opinion, the film “Brother,” featuring Jayam Ravi, presents an exaggerated narrative that blends humor and emotion within a family setting. The actor masterfully portrays a character who lives life without much forethought, which is both captivating and relatable in its own way, providing a sense of comfort through his unplanned journey.
The plot of the film offers a lighthearted and amusing journey, causing laughter at numerous points. Furthermore, the film’s backdrop is the stunning vistas of Ooty in the Nilgiris, providing a tranquil getaway via its captivating visuals.
In terms of technical aspects, the movie showcases one of Harris Jayaraj’s finest compositions in quite some time. His tracks, such as the love song and the wedding number, echo his past works, but the dance sequences, it could be argued, could be even more captivating.
The Bad:
The film featuring Jayam Ravi struggles noticeably due to its outdated plotline and conventional storytelling method. Although this traditional method of narrating a basic tale may have thrived in Tamil cinema during the 1990s or early 2000s, it requires modernization and reworking nowadays.
The movie doesn’t do justice to evoking nostalgia or including contemporary cultural references, which weakens its overall presentation and leaves viewers wondering why they are still watching it. While there might be a few instances that provoke laughter, the film generally falls flat in terms of humor. Additionally, the melodramatic scenes don’t strike a chord with viewers.
From a writing perspective, the movie lacks a compelling character arc, and the one presented fails to evoke an emotional response, feeling somewhat juvenile in its execution. To summarize, the writing of the film can be described as “uncreative” or simply “cringe-worthy.”
In addition, I found that none of the characters seemed to evolve organically within the narrative, and a sudden romantic plotline appeared without sufficient preparation or background information. As a devoted reader, it felt disjointed and unexpected for me.
The Performance:
In the movie, Jayam Ravi, Priyanka Arul Mohan, and Bhumika Chawla are the main actors, each taking significant roles. However, only Bhumika provided some depth to her character. Jayam Rivi’s performance was typical of his comedic roles, while Priyanka seemed to merely appear sporadically in and out of the scene without much development.
As a devoted admirer, I’d humbly express that, in their modest roles, Rao Ramesh and MS Bhaskar seemed like beacons of hope amidst the turbulence. In essence, they served as life-saving rafts when the ship was sinking.

The Verdict:
This Brother film is more of a routine comedy, offering minimal amusement. If you’re seeking a Diwali movie for some casual laughter to share with loved ones, it could be worth a watch. However, if you’re not particularly interested, it might be wise to give it a pass.
