2005’s acclaimed movie “Brokeback Mountain,” directed by Ang Lee, will be making a comeback to cinemas as Focus Features announces the film’s return to mark its 20-year anniversary.
When is the Brokeback Mountain theaterical rerelease?
The re-release of the movie “Brokeback Mountain” has been scheduled for June 22nd and June 25th, 2025. Focus Features has additionally planned a new poster, merchandise, and various promotional events to coincide with this rerelease, though specific details about these extras remain undisclosed.
First released in 2005, Brokeback Mountain featured Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal portraying characters Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist. The film explores their evolving romantic bond as cowboys during the 1960s while they struggle with accepting their true identities. In addition to Ledger and Gyllenhaal, the cast included Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, and Randy Quaid.
The movie, produced by Focus Features, was a huge triumph and garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success. It was nominated for a total of eight Academy Awards, taking home three: Best Director (Ang Lee), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score. However, despite its impressive box office performance, the film encountered backlash and criticism from certain groups who were opposed to its portrayal of homosexuality.
Following Crash winning Best Picture instead of their movie, critics claimed that the Academy showed bias and discrimination towards certain themes, suggesting they deliberately withheld an Oscar from the film due to its subject matter. These claims were supported by Ang Lee last year, who expressed his belief that, at that time, there was a self-imposed limit on how many awards a movie like Brokeback Mountain could receive.
Regardless of any debates, Brokeback Mountain continues to be a groundbreaking movie for this era and is frequently recognized as a driving force behind the rise of queer cinema into mainstream popularity. In 2018, the Library of Congress chose the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, recognizing its cultural, historical, or artistic importance.
