Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 9 recap and review: "The Colorblind Painter"

As a seasoned medical professional with years of experience under my belt, I must say that this week’s episode of Brilliant Minds was nothing short of captivating. The way the characters navigate their personal and professional lives is reminiscent of my own journey, albeit with a touch more drama and a dash of humor.

Exploring how one copes when they lose their deepest passion is a topic delved into during season 1, episode 9 of the series, “Brilliant Minds”.

Caution: this post contains SPOILERS from Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 9.

Titled “The Artist Without Color,” it was clear from the start that this episode would focus on a unique case. Wolf and his team were treating a patient who had lost the ability to perceive colors. This wasn’t just any patient; Gabriel is a gifted artist, and without the ability to see colors, he can no longer paint. However, he has an upcoming art exhibition.

Wolf finds himself curious. What’s the reason behind Gabriel not being able to perceive colors anymore? It was around a couple of months back when he experienced an accident, which seems to be connected to this change in his vision. Therefore, Wolf understands that there must be a connection.

Loss of love and passion in Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 9

It seems Wolf isn’t fully resolving this case. He acknowledges it’s not about the eyes, and the parts of the brain responsible for color vision appear to be functioning normally. Instead, it appears to be a psychological issue, which Wolf eventually deduces when he discovers that Gabriel’s wife perished in the same car accident as him.

What he’s describing goes beyond simply losing color. He’s talking about the profound impact of losing his spouse, as Gabriel can no longer recall her physical appearance.

After Tom left, we gain insight into Wolf’s emotional state, marking the start of his exploration with psychedelics. This was his unique means to reunite with his father. The brief conversations with his father, though imagined, rekindled his enthusiasm for life. These interactions allowed him to confide in someone he believed cared deeply about him, sharing both the ups and downs of his experiences.

In essence, Wolf opted to share some mind-altering substances with Gabriel, understanding that their use is technically prohibited in New York State. Yet, it seemed as though the emotional longing for his wife to regain her vibrant image outweighed Gabriel’s concerns about legality. After all, he hadn’t seen her in such vivid colors since the car accident, and even a glimmer of hope was enough to entice him. However, the benefits were only realized when Gabriel chose to use these substances.

There was nothing that the doctors could do, and so Gabriel went home defeated.

Wolf will always do what he can to help patients

Despite this setback, Wolf persisted and made another trip to see Gabriel, hoping to discover a solution that could revitalize him. Upon spotting his missing wallet at the store, it turned out that Gabriel had glanced outside to confirm his suspicion.

Initially, Wolf was taken aback. After all, how did Gabriel manage to perceive something from such a distance? However, with another trial, Wolf successfully figured out the puzzle.

Gabriel may not be able to see color, but he can see grey in many more shades—much more than the 50, I guess. This is a breakthrough. It explains why a lot of items end up looking like a blur. They are on the same wavelength of light, so the colors of grey blend together. Now this is something Wolf can help with. He gets special glasses made to allow Gabriel to see the different wavelengths better.

It functions well. Gabriel adapts quite effectively to his new lifestyle, evidently so through his new creations in art.

As an ardent admirer, I’m constantly struck by how Brilliant Minds underscores the transformative power of compassion. What sets our medical professionals apart is their ability to peer beyond the realm of medicine and truly connect with the individual. Wolf, for instance, has been a beacon of hope because he approaches each patient not just as a case, but as a unique person. By opening my eyes to this perspective—a worldview that is fundamentally different from my own—Wolf has shown me an alternative way of life that I had previously overlooked.

Nichols brings Wolf into the 21st century

In the ninth episode of season 1 from Brilliant Minds, we didn’t witness any significant romantic moments akin to Wolf/Nichols, but that’s alright; instead, we observed some sweet interactions between the couple. They seemed eager to discuss their days with each other, which was incredibly adorable. Isn’t it charming when new love blossoms?

Establishing a relationship starts off strongly here, as Wolf reveals more of himself in this instance. Previously guarded, he now feels comfortable enough to confide in Nichols. Not only does he desire to share his own experiences, but also shows genuine interest in hearing about Nichols’ day at the conference.

Yet, Wolf lacks a mobile phone. But, Nichols ushers Wolf into modern times by getting him one. Moreover, teaching Wolf how to pick up a call, as performed by Gabriel, is simply heartwarming to watch.

Pierce does the right thing in Brilliant Minds

In this episode, we delve deeper into Pierce’s marital issues as her former affair partner unexpectedly reappears, causing a stir. Pierce’s friends Ericka and Dana try to calm the situation, doing an admirable job. Although it was unjust for Pierce to yell at them, this incident served as a wake-up call for her, suggesting she should cut ties with this woman for good.

I make it clear to Pierce that there’s a significant conflict of interest at play here. As a result, he needs to pass this patient on to another healthcare professional.

The situation for Pierce appears to be deteriorating rather than improving; this woman is clearly dangerous, posing a risk to lives. The discovery of her car being vandalized by this unstable individual should serve as a significant red flag for Pierce. It’s crucial she is transparent about the potential danger. HIPAA regulations safeguard medical information, but Pierce can disclose the woman’s name and the reason behind her suspicion to the police. In fact, she could simply reveal that it’s the woman her husband had an affair with, if she chooses to do so. HIPAA doesn’t apply to police investigations—that’s what lawyers are for.

Van’s secret is out, but it’s not the one you’d expect

The scene resumed with Van and Ericka sharing the same bed, each preferring to maintain discreetness about their relationship. However, Ericka is particularly cautious about keeping it hidden, fearing others might discover it. The issue lies in the fact that rumors tend to travel swiftly, and we’re well aware of Dana and Jacob’s penchant for gossip.

Throughout the entire episode, Jacob is trying to discover the identity of the special woman in Van’s life. However, Van manages to keep Ericka hidden from sight. This secret-keeping appears to cause some complications. Understanding the stress Van is experiencing, Ericka feels it’s best to end things between them. It seems like this might be the appropriate decision. Ericka has feelings for Jacob, and continuing her relationship with Van isn’t fair to him.

Well, it turns out that the phone call wasn’t to a woman at all. It was to his six-year-old son.

It appears that Van has a son – quite a surprising twist! We’re eager to uncover more details about this development, as it hasn’t been hinted at in the show thus far. I must confess, my feelings towards this revelation are ambiguous for now. However, I am curious to learn about the reasons behind Van and his child’s mother’s separation.

Brilliant Minds airs Mondays at 10/9c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
