As a seasoned medical professional with years of experience under my belt, I must say that this week’s episode of Brilliant Minds truly touched my heart. The story of Roman and his journey towards accepting his own mortality was a poignant reminder of the preciousness of life and the importance of listening to our patients.
In this week’s broadcasting of “Brilliant Minds,” we witnessed one of the series’ most impactful and poignant installments to date. Here’s a recap of all the events that unfolded during episode 7 of the first season.
Caution: this post contains SPOILERS from Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 7.
Once Dr. Wolf developed a bond with John Doe, it became clear that there was some measure of optimism for his recovery. Indeed, Dr. Wolf would go to great lengths to aid his patient, yet the turn of events during this particular episode surpassed his expectations.
In essence, John Doe, more famously known as Roman, successfully obtained the device enabling interaction with medical professionals. Unlike typical scenes where dialogue is derived from reading off a computer screen, Alex Ozerov-Meyer engaged directly with each character in the episode. This personal touch brought a profoundly human element to the storyline, one that many shows might overlook. I believe this approach significantly enhanced the poignancy of the episode’s conclusion.
Roman’s backstory explored in Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 7
The program revealed how a man who can only speak Russian ended up in the country when he suffered a stroke. It was discovered that he hails from Chechnya and had to leave the country for his safety. Roman is gay, which is illegal in Chechnya. Along with his partner Alex, they managed to reach the United States.
Initially, it was intended that Alex travel to America first due to his fluency in English. But as conditions grew perilous for Roman, they both decided to emigrate instead. Unfortunately, Roman suffered an accident which resulted in a stroke. For the longest period, Alex was unaware of Roman’s whereabouts, as hospital staff failed to make an effort to learn about their “John Doe” patient.
Initially, Wolf showed concern, a quality for which Roman felt thankful. Regardless of the situation, Roman was acutely aware of his surroundings, often observing life go by. Eventually, Wolf decided to take care of Roman and assist him in his needs. The interns joined in, mirroring this compassion, making it easier for Roman to share his experiences with them.
Dana successfully tracked down Alex, bringing them closer together after being separated for several months. A heartfelt instant occurred when Alex expressed his intention to bring Roman back home. Regardless of the distance, he vowed to stand by his beloved one, providing care in any way necessary. Considering all they had endured for their love, this was a minor concession on Alex’s part.
Roman makes a heartbreaking decision for everyone
It’s wonderful that Alex is eager to take on these tasks, but it seems like no one is truly paying attention to what Roman desires. Has anyone considered asking him? That’s a recurring theme in Brilliant Minds. They aim to understand Roman better and grant him a voice, yet they fail to directly ask him about his preferences.
Roman has decided to stop using the life support equipment, as he no longer wishes to live in this body. He’s expressing his desire for a different life, one he hasn’t had the chance to experience due to his current health condition. This decision is not medically assisted suicide, which is illegal where Roman resides (New York). Instead, it involves removing the machine that assists his breathing, as his lungs are too weak to function without it following multiple infections.
a good doctor isn’t just about doing treatments; it’s also about truly listening to patients. This means sometimes making tough decisions, like letting Roman decide how he wants to live (or not) his life. Essentially, this means giving him the freedom to choose even if that choice is to die. If we give someone a voice, shouldn’t we honor their wishes and listen to what they say?
Roman’s sole wish is to not pass away in a hospital. Despite not sharing this view, Wolf accommodates Roman’s request and arranges for him to die at home instead. For the first time, interns and Josh lay eyes on the house, a moment that turns out to be both sad and beautiful. Alex is present too, and the scene underscores the essence of choice. This instance symbolizes bodily autonomy, a right that everyone deserves to have.
Ericka is honest with Van about her feelings
Due to Van’s unique condition of mirror-touch synesthesia, he experiences the emotions that Ericka feels as if they were his own. This has led to a misunderstanding where Van believes that Ericka feels for him, when in reality, she feels the same way about someone else. Nonetheless, Van is eager to express his feelings towards her, which mirror hers.
In this situation, it’s when he receives a punch, luckily it happens before he reveals his own emotions towards her. It seems Ericka feels strongly about Jacob, not Van, and wishes to keep her feelings hidden from others. I wonder if Jacob might be a suitable match for Ericka, but that remains to be seen.
It seems quite likely that this situation will lead to a love triangle. Here’s hoping Van maintains his composure following these events, as he’s been a genuinely good person so far.
Wolf finally acts on his feelings in Brilliant Minds
The aspect I enjoy most is the conclusion. It was noted by Roman that Josh holds a fondness for Wolf, now it’s up to Wolf to seize the opportunity.
Life often teaches us the importance of seizing opportunities when they present themselves. Roman discovered, in a difficult manner, that life doesn’t come with a guarantee for tomorrow. If there’s one piece of advice he’d like to pass on to others, it would be to stop postponing and start acting now.
In the heart-pounding tale I’ve come across, it transpires that he shared a dream with Wolf upon his arrival in New York. The dream was as simple as spotting Alex on a bustling street and dashing over for a passionate kiss – one of those grand romantic gestures. Alas, Roman never got the opportunity to enact this dream, but fortunately, Wolf made it come true for him instead.
Across the street, he spots Josh. Impulsively, he dashes over to plant a kiss on him, eliciting a blend of bewilderment, joy, and surprise on Josh’s countenance. I’m eagerly anticipating their relationship to flourish further. It appears that Josh holds Wolf in high regard, not just for his professional prowess but also the manner he conducts himself, and vice versa. Given their strong professional rapport, could they replicate that chemistry on a personal level?
Trouble at the hospital after Roman’s decision
Indeed, the situation didn’t conclude with pure joy. Initially, Dr. Gadson intended to bring Pierce along on his surfboard, but upon learning about Roman’s demise, he expressed his reluctance to collaborate with Wolf, explaining that this was the reason behind it.
Look, if Wolf had done something erratic or gone against rules, then I could understand Gadson’s anger. However, Wolf was listening to the patient, and that’s something that should have happened. I understand that Gadson is seeing this as messing up his results, and it’s why I hate stats such as “deaths within 30 days” or “5-year life expectancy.” There are so many factors that go into this. If a patient chooses to die within those 30 days, why should he have to hang on? Why should he have to suffer for the sake of results. There should be a way to separate those results and actually be honest about them.
It seems likely that their actions will lead to consequences for both Wolf and Pierce down the line, given that even Wolf’s own mother feels he abandoned a patient. There are instances where one may question whether certain individuals should practice medicine, and it appears we might be witnessing that with Gadson and Wolf’s mother.
Brilliant Minds airs Mondays at 10/9c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
