Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 6 recap and review: "The Girl Who Cried Pregnant"

As a long-time fan of medical dramas, I must say that “Brilliant Minds” has been a refreshing addition to my Monday night viewing schedule. The unique blend of neuroscience and psychiatry, combined with the diverse cast of characters, keeps me hooked episode after episode.

In the sixth episode of season 1, it’s now time for a return to high school in the series ‘Brilliant Minds’. Let’s revisit the storyline concerning the unexpected teen pregnancies within the group.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 6.

The wolf finds himself swiftly drawn into an intriguing predicament. Initially, it seems like a teenager visiting the hospital to hide the fact she’s pregnant from her parents. But things take a turn when no baby is present in this scenario, suggesting that Wolf has stumbled upon something far more complex than he initially thought.

This situation grows increasingly strange, as it appears that other students at the school are also claiming to be pregnant. Could this be an instance of collective psychological phenomena, perhaps a form of mass psychosis related to pregnancy?

Brilliant Minds takes Wolf and co. back to high school

When Wolf discovers that a number of girls believe they’re expecting, he must determine the reason for this shared belief. This phenomenon is known as mass hysterical pregnancy, but he needs to uncover the underlying cause. These types of pregnancies have a medical basis, and it’s crucial to find out what’s happening. There may be a potentially severe issue among the students that could even lead to tragedy.

Is there an environmental issue at the school causing concern among teachers, leading them to convene a meeting with parents to discuss it? What strikes me as unusual is that the principal didn’t inform the parents prior to this point. I find myself aligning with the mother who wonders why they are only being told about these “pregnancies” now for the first time.

The interns are tracking several young women who believe they might be expecting. It’s fortunate that Wolf is present when Sarah, the initial hospital arrival who set off this chain of events, faints in the corridor. Sarah mentions that she has been experiencing a loss of vision. However, the tests conducted so far haven’t revealed any findings, suggesting another neurological issue might be at play.

A productive approach here would be to have the girls stay overnight at the hospital, as this could potentially help identify the initial patient (Patient Zero) involved in their current condition. This situation offers a valuable insight into how medical professionals can delve deeper into complex medical scenarios. Upon overhearing the girls singing, Wolf and the interns notice an unusual bond between them, which seems to be reinforced by oxytocin. To further understand this connection, it’s crucial for us to engage with the girls more closely.

Dana’s past is explored

In our previous investigations, we’ve delved into several aspects, yet Dana remains somewhat of a puzzle. She constructs barriers around herself, yet it’s evident that she holds affection. Here, Brilliant Minds delves into the reasons behind this.

It’s clear that she didn’t like high school, but what happened? When she goes into the library, she has a panic attack. At first, she feels bad for it, but the girl she’s looking after, Lily, offers a non-judgmental listening ear.

This charm facilitates Lily to open up about her true situation. They, the women, form a sisterhood and have cast a spell for conception. However, they’ve recently attempted another spell, but unfortunately, it seems to have had an adverse effect. The coven members suspect their illness is related to this miscast spell.

It appears that a student had departed from the school, which set off a chain of events. The principal confided that it might have been fortunate for the parents to withdraw their daughter as she could have gotten involved in what followed. Interestingly, this girl was the first case of an outbreak – we refer to her as Patient Zero. It’s important to note that at the time, she was expecting and is now going into labor.

Sam’s departure resulted in a twofold sorrow. The friends mourned the loss of their companion, as they felt that Sam was leaving behind his childhood without them. This event sparked a series of emotional upheavals among them. Their empathy ran incredibly deep. (This version aims to maintain the original meaning while using more natural and conversational language.)

Indeed, it’s essential for these teenagers to understand that they are not in fact expecting. This revelation can be heart-wrenching for every girl involved, given their enthusiasm about motherhood. Facing an unpleasant reality is something we all try to avoid. I must say, I feel the episode could have delved deeper into this challenging moment, as not everyone may handle such a setback with equal grace.

Pierce gets help for John Doe

John Doe receives some positive news: Pierce has persuaded another medical professional to enroll him in a program designed to assist with his Locked-In Syndrome. However, this doctor is wary of Wolf due to his history of rule-breaking, but ultimately agrees to let John Doe join the program under one condition – that Wolf adheres strictly to all rules and expectations set forth.

Is it a challenging task to expect Wolf to help his patient? What transpires when Wolf believes he’s in the know?

Aside from that, Pierce pointed out that it appeared Wolf was preparing for a date while meeting the school principal. While there might have been something between them, Wolf rejected the principal at the end of the episode. There seems to have been a flicker of interest, but Wolf is “extremely unreachable,” not because he’s involved with someone else. It seems that Wolf understands the importance of keeping others away from his complex personal life, which is commendable, but it may lead to a solitary existence. Could his plants and Pierce be all he needs?

Perhaps Pierce has found someone he feels comfortable enough to confide in, which leads me to consider the possibility. He mentions that he was roughly a teenager when he last encountered his father, linking back to the incident in the woods where his father declared he was the Messiah before disappearing. It seems Wolf harbors guilt over what transpired with his father, and this may explain why he’s been secluded within his home amidst his greenery.

Van figures a way to control his MTS

At a certain stage, Van experiences contractions similar to childbirth. Suddenly, he pauses, and by the end of the episode, he reveals that he managed to maintain control due to shifting his focus onto someone else – Ericka. Her tranquility helped him find his own peace. This situation offers an insight into how Van might utilize this predicament to his benefit.

Apart from sharing other aspects, Dana delves into her history as well. During her final year at high school, her younger sibling passed away. The news of this loss struck her while she was in the library, causing an intense emotional response – a panic attack – that echoes her current experience.

Over the past six episodes, it’s heartening to witness the interns bonding more closely. Initially, they were unfamiliar with each other, but their friendship blossomed surprisingly quickly. Watching this transformation unfold has been quite delightful.

Brilliant Minds airs Mondays at 10/9c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
