Brilliant Minds Interview: Tamberla Perry on NBC Medical Drama With Zachary Quinto

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say Brilliant Minds has truly captured my attention and piqued my interest. With a stellar cast led by Zachary Quinto and Tamberla Perry, this medical drama is a breath of fresh air in the genre, offering a unique blend of intellect, empathy, and wit that resonates with both gamers and non-gamers alike.

In an exclusive interview, Tyler Treese (Editor-in-Chief of ComingSoon) chatted with Tamberla Perry, a star from Brilliant Minds, focusing on the medical drama. During their conversation, Perry delved into her character, what sets the show apart, and other intriguing aspects. The series, featuring Zachary Quinto, debuts on Monday, September 23 at 10 p.m., broadcasted simultaneously on NBC in both Eastern Time (ET) and Pacific Time (PT).

Based on the remarkable life and achievements of renowned author and physician Oliver Sacks, the series Brilliant Minds focuses on a groundbreaking, charismatic neurologist and his dedicated team of interns as they delve into the final uncharted territory – the human mind – all while navigating their personal relationships and mental well-being.

Tyler Treese: In Brilliant Minds, you’re fantastic and so is Zachary Quinto. I’ve never seen him give a less-than-stellar performance, but in this role, he’s truly exceptional. How does he work as a co-actor? He seems to be operating at peak performance in this production.

Tamberla Perry begins by acknowledging those unfamiliar with the show, Brilliant Minds. The series draws inspiration from the life and work of Dr. Oliver Sacks, whose character, Dr. Oliver Wolf, is portrayed by Zachary. Through the story, we delve into the lives of Dr. Wolf and his team of interns as they traverse the final unexplored territory – the intricate labyrinth of the human mind.

In summary, Zachary is fantastic, and many people have asked me, “Is he as intense as he appears?” I’ve received countless messages asking this exact question. To which I replied, “Absolutely not.” Instead, he’s quite the jester, full of fun. Our off-camera relationship is terrific, and I believe it shows on screen since my character, Carol Pierce, was inspired by Carol Burnett, a true friend and colleague of Dr. Oliver Sacks. This isn’t something we had to invent; we had a model to follow. Even though we aren’t limited by the time constraints of the 1960s, Carol Burnett and Dr. Oliver Sacks were indeed close friends in reality.

The lively banter between your two characters certainly comes across on screen, as you skillfully balance teasing him with genuine concern for his wellbeing. Which aspect of this dynamic appeals to you the most? I find it incredibly entertaining to observe.

Indeed, your observation is spot-on. You’ve essentially answered your own question regarding my interactions with him. I do challenge him sometimes because of his reputation as a challenging physician to work with, which many people find daunting. People tend to avoid working with him due to these characteristics. As his colleague and friend, I feel it is my responsibility to guide him when he comes to my hospital. I try to explain that certain behaviors could lead to a loss of opportunities elsewhere, where such conversations are not being initiated or chances given.

Carol understands that her friend is exceptionally intelligent. She realizes he will empathically walk in his patients’ shoes to diagnose them accurately, which is the kind of doctor she desires for her team. She brings him onboard this hospital to assemble an ideal neuropsychology team and aid patients who others have deemed untreatable.

In simpler terms, your point about the character portraying his patients’ perspectives is clear. What particularly moved me in the series was the genuine empathy it showed towards all its patients. This level of understanding and compassion isn’t common in medical dramas. Instead of just caring for them, this show seems to go above and beyond by truly trying to understand and assist these individuals. I found this portrayal of empathy to be a particularly touching aspect of the series. Could you delve into that part of the show?

Definitely, I couldn’t agree more! One aspect of our show that particularly resonates with me is Tyler, when you follow along week by week, you won’t find episodes where characters come in with a problem and leave having solved it within an hour. Instead, this show focuses on the mind and mental health, just as you wouldn’t expect immediate resolution in a therapy session. We’re not here to ‘fix’ anyone quickly. Rather, we aim to provide practical tools for coping and adaptation that individuals can use in their daily lives.

How can I adjust to this changed lifestyle? We’re working diligently to understand the underlying causes, but we want to equip you with strategies for adapting once you’re back in society. This process isn’t something that happens overnight; it takes time, often more than a single day or session. In fact, it may take years, even decades. It’s fascinating to witness this transformation in many of our cases and patients, as they continue to visit us for support. Remember, everyone in this journey is dynamic and evolving – no one remains fixed.

What was it like collaborating with Michael Grassi, the mastermind behind Brilliant Minds? I must say, despite numerous medical dramas, this one truly stands out as something original and refreshing.

Michael Grassi, the individual in question, take note: Whenever he pens something tailored for me, there’s no need for him to ask for my approval. He can simply contact my representative and inform them about me participating in the show. I am willing to collaborate with him until the end of my days. From the get-go, when I auditioned for the role, it was likely my second or third try, and he happened to be there, possibly along with a director. Since my first on-screen encounter with him, he has been incredibly supportive. He made me believe that I had already landed the part, even though I knew there were probably several other actresses vying for the same role at the time.

Working closely with him as a co-creator, he has consistently encouraged my input regarding any difficulties or concerns about the characters. No matter the hour, I can pick up the phone and share my thoughts, such as “We’re filming a scene tomorrow, and I realize this might be inconvenient given your schedule, but here’s what I feel is causing friction…” He has always welcomed open communication and collaborated with me to ensure my comfort level. Truly, he is an ideal showrunner, and I genuinely mean every word of it.
